Default Moving target Rifle

I hunt in an area that is a bottle neck between two large areas. Tthe deer coming through this areaare either spooked or driven from the other areas so they are always moving. This area is a depression between two hills so at all times I have a safe backstop. I use a Abolt 7mm RemMag with a 26 barrel and a 3-9X40 scope which is not the ideal set-up. For next year I want to get a firearm that is better suited for my situation. I'm thinking a Browning BAR in 308 with the barrel cut down to 18.5 inches with open sights, or maybe a red dot scope. What do you guys think. Please note I'm not one of those maniacs whose going to empty the clip with total disreguard towards other hunters and my prey. Saftey is always first for me. Just looking for a rifle with a quick follow-up shot that is low recoiling, with knockdown power, and fast on target.

I use a 7mmstw with 26" barrel and 3x10 scopeand have shot several game animals that were moving.I have also used a bar in 7mm remmag. When all was said and done,I sold the bar as Ifound that I wasjust as effectivewith my longer barreled bolt action.Shot placement more than made up for a fast follow up shot.

Look at the remington model 7. shorter barrel, quick swinging carbine. it comes in common cartridges that do well in shorter barrels.

I was thinking a lever action in 30/30 could also be an option. Maybe a 45/70 or a marlin 450. Choices. Thanks guys.

This seems like an area with a very definite range limit - what is the max shot? The good old 30-30 lever can easily be sighted point blank to 175 yards and has deer-kill power further yet. It can be fitted with all sorts of iron, red dot, hi-vis open and low powered scopes. I just got a Marlin mod 336 and put a 1-3X 20 Weaver V3 scope and will hopefully report on how well it works. Last year I shot my friend's Winchester mod 94 30-30 at the range with a red dot scope and I really didn't care for it - he loves it though and scored a double on walking/trotting does last season, clean boiler room kills. My scope has a very wide field of view at 1X which I've practiced out to 100 yds (my max range where I'm hunting this year), and it works great for "moment of deer-kill" shots. I think it will be good for quick acquisition anywhere at 1 x and most everwhere at 3x.

Not all deer are spooked. sometimes you have a good shot with the right rifle set up to take out a running or bounding deer.
