ORIGINAL: Doe Dumper

Hasnt Remington weakened those STW loads considerably since the 7mm Ultra Mag was introduced?

Loading equipment has'nt been reduced!

Is the 300 wsm not a liitle better velocity & energy cartridge than the 30.06 and I am sure there has been many, many, grizzzly bears killed over the years with 30.06.

I handled some 7mm STW shells and they weren't near full with powder, reminded me of a reduced recoil load when I shook it.

The 7mm STW uses a parent case of the 8mm Remington Magnum, which, of course, is necked down to 7mm and its case taper straightened slightly. The new round has become very popular among long-range deer hunters.
“We kept watching the sales of 8mm Remington Magnum brass climb up and up,” said a Remington ammo-development specialist. “We knew from gun sales that that it wasn’t being used in rifles chambered for that caliber. and it became apparent that the popularity of the 7mm STW was just too big to ignore any longer.” Once these trends were clear, Remington legitimized the popular then-wildcat round.
Initial factory loads feature a 140-grain bullet with an advertised muzzle velocity of 3,325 fps. I found that my rifle’s 25.5-inch barrel actually exceeded that, averaging 3,359 fps. Handloads should be able to boost this velocity by a considerable margin. Some reports have 140-grain bullets running over 3,500 fpsWe withhold judgment about whether those speeds are achievable with mainstream loads.
Based on our experience with the round, we think that the 160-grain bullet will be more practical for this cartridge. Indeed, the Barnes #1 Reloading Manual shows several loads that exceed 3,300 fps using this bullet. Also, Remington will likely bring out more factory loads soon. With the current factory loads, the 7mm Westerner has an 11-percent energy gain over the 7mm Remington Magnum and a 7.1-percent gain over the 7mm Weatherby Magnum at 400 yards.
I have been shooting the 7mmstw since 1990,long before remington commercialized it.The factory loads are pathetically mild.I have owned three different 7mmstw rifles and currently own two.My current rifles average 3500fps with 140gr bullets which is all that I currently use in these rifles.I have taken pronghorn, whitetails, mule deer, bighorn, elk and moose with 140gr bullets with great results.I also own a 7mmultramag but I find that I am only able to gain at most 75fps more out of this cartridge than with the 7mmstw.Such a small gain hardly justifies the extra powder burned, extra recoil and even shorter barrel life.

I sightmy 7mmstws in to be 2-3/4" high at 100 yards.That puts them 3-1/2" high at 200 yards,about 3/4" high at 300 yards,about 6-1/4" low at 400 yards and about 18-1/2" low at 500 yards.

What production rifles are chambered in 7mm STW? I've seen many high performance custom rifles chambered in it but not many production rifles if any.

There were several models available from remington, winchester and sako but most have been discontinued.Your best chance is to either find a newunsold rifle on the shelf or to buy a 7mmremmag with a 26" barrel and have it rechambered.
