I just recently got a Heritage Mfg. .22lr/.22mag revolver and like it alot. its pretty light so you can shoot it all day. and you can put the mags in if you need a bit more power.

I would suggest the Ruger MKII/III or a Ruger Single Six with the two cylinders for 22lr/22mag. I love my Ruger Mark II, only wish I would have gotten it in bull barrel.

Like several people said the Ruger Mark II is a excellent pistol to get. I've had one for years and shoot it quite a bit.

22 is the way to go, as you said its cheap shooting. I have 3 Ruger 22's 2autos a mark II NRA I bought because I liked the looks, turned out my wife liked the way it shoots. I then got an older Mark I with a bull barrell I put a red dot on that one. My dad passed away and I now have his single six whichcomes withtwo cylinders, 1 for the magnum.I dont use the magnums too much, they cost more and a 22 LRworks just as good on small game IMHO.We sometimes shoot silhoutte in the winter and I usally use one of the 22s. We also have a couple of SW's 357 & 38 and PPK 380 a 1911 45 cal and 30 cal luger. Hands down the 22's get the most use. I am a ruger fan because of I like them and they have tons of accesories available for them. Good luck with your quest!

22 cal - fun to shoot - very accurate - and cheap. Great starter for anyone just entering the hangun scene.

Work your way up to the Big Boys,357-44cal etc...

Ruger makes an excellant semi and revolver. I used a Ruger pistol many years ago to shoot Jack Rabbits at night. Also used a Rem Nylon 66 on Jacks.(anybody remember that oldeee).

I never thought about shootin rats at the dump. Might look into that one -sounds like a blast!

BTW - I agree,the 22 cal is a great(best IMO) home defense weapon.
Woman can handle and you can spit out 10 rounds of hollow points vs firing a cannon inside the walls of your home with possible miss on that Bad Guy.

I have 44 mag (unloaded) but keep a loaded 22 auto with HP's and spare loaded clip in dresser next to bed.
