I would look for a 7MM-08, although there are about a dozen calibers that could fit this bill nicely.

both are good,.308 a little better bullet selection, lower cost.270 a little more range ,but out to 200 yds take your pick.

The .308 or 7mm-08 would work well at distance mentioned but then pretty well most cartridges should work up to 200 yards.

Trailer is correct. The 308 and 7MM-08 are about as good as it gets for all big game. Both cartridges are very efficient with short barrels. Not so for the 30-06 and 270. You burn a lot more powder than you can use.

The 375 JDJ is a fine cartridge but not what I would consider the best choice for 200 yard whitetail shots. Moose and elephants and stuff yes. Whitetail? 7MM-08

Are you getting one for pistol or rifle? All of the already meantioned ones probably would fit your needs. Might add 25-06, or .280 into the mix also for consideration.

For my Deer Rifle I have the .270 and love it.

Of Course I am tempted to order a 375 JDJ for next years elk hunt.
