Default Scope Question

I am looking at getting the Leupold VX-II 3-9x40. It is $269. Is it worth an extra $60 to get the 3-9x50? You are supposed to be able to a little earlier and later.

It depends upon the use of your rifle. For me the 50mm doesn't provide enough extra light to justify the size, weight, and expense over the 40 mm for a whitetail rifle. The VX-II 40mm does an excellent job compared to most of the cheap scopes on the market. In fact they do a much better job than many of the cheap 42-50 mm scopes I've tried.

It works out to around 2% more light. Both will work fine, however I prefer 50MM.

I would consider what type of land you are hunting. The 50mm is going to have a smaller field of view. If it mostly open field and stuff the 50mm would be okay. If it is timber and thick I would stick with the 40mm.

I hunt mostly timber so I have opted to try a Nikon 2-7 x 32 for the reason of the wider field of view. I might be taking a hit on how much light it brings in, but I think it will be fine.

Good luck with your choice.

I would go with the 40mm as it can be mounted lower and is less bulky and will fit a saddle scabbard if you ever go on a horseback hunt.
