I'm thinking about getting one for deer, but how big will it handle? I thought about a magnum, but I'm kind of a small guy and don't like the big kick. Please help!

It should be plenty for any deer, whitetail or mule, that you'll ever encounter. If you have concerns about the 7mm, how about a .308. Not much difference in recoil but it offers some heavier bullet options.

For deer it is excellent. Moose or Elk IMO is a little light, but if you limited yourself on range and shots it might make do. If you are worried about recoil what about a 308 or 3006? They will allow you to bullet grade up or down and kick a little more than the 7mm-08 but definitely tolerable. When I started hunting at 12 I used a 308, my buddy a 3006 I can't think that either one of us complained about the kick.
Maybe if possible try shooting a few different calibers and see what will suit your needs and recoil. You maybe suprised how much you can comfortably handle!!!

Ive shot somewhere around 20 deer with my 7mm-08, I was really suprised with its knock down power, Most of the deer Ive shot with it didnt move after being hit. With the right bullets I wouldnt hesistate to hunt elk with it.

a 7-08 is a great gun capable of most you want to do with a rifle. If stoked with great pills and had an elk or moose 150 yards away with my 7-08 I wouldn't be without bloody hands. <img src=icon_smile_wink.gif border=0 align=middle>

I have used one quite a bit. Deer out to 300 yds and bigger game like elk about 200 yds. Use a good bullet and good placement and you won,t have any trouble.

Goodness Gracious...Swedes and Norwegians are blasting 1500 lb moose with their puny 6x55's on a regular basis and we are concerned about using a 7-08 on Moose and Elk. 7x57 will take out anything that walks this continent why wouldn't a more powerful/accurate cartridge do the same ? Probably the most underrated round out there

My brother has a 7mm/08 and he has shot deer, pronghorn and elk with it. Never had a problem killing anything. Great round that doesn't kick too much. If you like the rifle and it shoots well, buy it!
