I don't reload, but I would imagine that you could load up some 220 grain round nose bullets in the 30-30, and they would be pretty good bear medicine.

The partition would also retain weight, however probably would have not expanded as quickley.
Actually theNP's "nose" would have expanded quite fast as it should!!! BUT, from the partition back, itwould havepenetrated deep doing a lot of damage and breaking bone on it's way!!!

That's what NP's do best, nose comes off even on soft animials, and the rest of the bullet drives deep even on tough animials!

Even in a 30-30!!

I realize this is a hypothetical question but I guess I just don't get it.[&:] Cause who in their right mind would use either as a grizzly back up gun?

Who is going to carry it for you while you are carrying your bow and pack?

Alaska requires a guide to hunt bears so he will have a big bore back up gun which will allow me to run and/ or hide while he is taking aim.;) :D

Try to stop a charging Grizzly with either of these two cartridges and unless you are very very very lucky with where the bullet impacts you will be a dead hunter. Even if yo do get into the vitals and inflict a fatal would it aint gonna kill him before he kills you.

I guess you could hope that the charging bear might realize that you are trying to stop him with a 30-30 and fall over dead laughing his arse off at you.

The new .500 Smith and Wesson revolver looks like a good candidate for a grizzly back up gun. It equals the performance of a .50 caliber muzzleloader with stout loads. I think I would still go for the 12 guage with and extended magazine full of rifled slugs.
