Default Will a .410 work in a 45/70?

.410 in 45/70 single shot? Will it work? Will the shot damage the rifling? I wouldn't think so, but I thought I better ask.

Don't do it.
the rifling will scatter the pellets at best....this is just not a good idea at all.

I'm not even sure it's safe.....maybe someone can shed light on it.

I shoot a .410 in a .45 long colt. I have a .45 long colt derringer single shot that has no rifling in it since the barrel isn't much longer then the cartridge. I have shot .410 bird shot through it. It is effective to about 40 feet. After that you're lucky to hit anything. Makes a great noise maker and snake gun. I guess a fellow could shoot a grouse if he caught one along side the road, but there would not be much sport in that. I shot some .45 long colt out of it and it has a heck of a recoil. I have not actually shot the pistol now in a couple years. I bought it more as a "why not own it" then anything else.....

I don't know if you have a 45-70 and a 410 crtridge available to compare, but if you look at the closely you will notice that the 410 rim is only slightly, if at all, larger than the case body of the 45-70. It might actually fall down into the chamber, but even if it didn't it would rattle around and would not be supported. Another thing that bothers me about the idea is the issue of shot in the rifling. Don't know what affects it would have but is it worth the risk? Not sure why you would even want to attempt such a thing in the first place.

.45-70 Big Power At Close Range
45-70 as in old breech loaded rifle? It can also fire 410 gauge shotgun shells.
If you cut the ... Well you can shoot my Derringer chambered in 45-70 then. ...

The lead shot won't damage the rifling - but, other than the dimensional issues between the two cases, rifled barrels tend to really donut shot patterns. One of the local law enforcement agencies bought a fully rifled deer barrel for slug shooting. But they also have to qualify with buckshot. Couldn't hit the target at 25 yards with 00 Buck. The area a couple of feet outside the target, on all sides, was pretty well shot up - but nothing in the middle.

Yes but a 45 Colt is a straight walled case while a 45-70 has a slight taper. The 45-70 also uses .458" bullets while the 45 Colt uses .452" usually.
