Hey everyone. I bought a Remington model 597 in .22 LR a few years back and have had nothing but trouble with it. Every other shot jams! I took it to the gunsmith and they weren't able to fix it. Even with the expensive ammo it jammed. If I wanted to hunt a squirrel or anything, I'd have better luck clubbing the thing to death then shooting it. Anyone else have this problem with this model of gun?

Yep. Had the same problems with mine when I had it. Would have saved yourself some trouble by doing a search here on the 597 first. Nothing good written about them on this forum.

I also have a 597 Jammaster. LOL It groups well, once you actually get the round in the chamber. I contacted Remington about it, and they acted surprised.
It seems to me, and I could be wrong, the problem is with the magazine. Thats where the shell seems to get hung up. I bought mine when they first came out, so I was not aware of all the problems people are having. Now, I am stuck with it, because most shooters are aware of the problem. Not too mention I would not feel right about selling it to someone knowing itis junk. Hope fully someday they will remedy the problem, but right now we are all SOL.

Yeah Remington has put out some jewels over the years. Their famous Jam-o-matic 742's the beautiful 710 and the reliable 597.Remington needs to get their act together, before it's to late. That's if it isn't already to late. I hate seeing a old gun maker go down hill.Unfortunately Remington seems to be on a down hill roll.

Frank, out of 49 long guns, the only Rem in the safe is a Rem Woodsmaster
in .35cal. Had a 700BDL .30-06 27yrs ago and sold it. Bought it at K-Mart
in 1967 for $176. That's when they used RKW finlsh on the stocks. Wish
I had it back.

Here is the problem with the 597.
When the bolt cycles rearward and stops against the buffer it begins moving foward again before the case can get completely out of the receiver. The charging handle smacks the empty case and knocks it right back into the receiver.
This is what you need to do. Cut the rubber buffer that is in the back of the receiver in half so that the bolt will move farther to the rear and allow the spent case to clear the receiver before moving foward again. Once you do this it should function just fine.
It took me a whole lot of shooting inside the test booth before I finally was able to figure out exactly why the case wasn't clearing the receiver.

i've heard bad things about the new 597 even before the new ones came out. i don't have one but have heard what others have thought of them and noone seems to like them.
on the other hand i have an 870 and a bdl in 30-06 and haven't had the least trouble with either of them.
