RE: ne suggestion for 30-06 under 575.00 with scope
Howa makes the Vanguard for Weatherby and then Weatherby puts their own stock on it. Howa also has made rifles for S&W, and a few other other manufacturers.
Howa also has their own line of model 1500 rifles. They are about the best built rifle out there for the ammount of money they cost. They incorperate features on their actions that would cost you a whole lot more money on other rifles. Features such as a vented bolt body in case of gas leakage from a pierced primer or worse. A very substantial m-16 style case extractor, flat bottom receiver with a huge integrated recoil lug. A 100% solid one piece bolt including the handle. One piece bottom metal with a steel floor plate. The same "three rings of steel" design that remington uses. You will find some of these features on all rifles but you won't find all of them but on the Howa and vanguard. |

I think that you would be able to find a used Remington 700 bolt action in the 270-30-06 range for about $300. Then you could puta nice Leupold VXI 2-7x33 scope on it for about another $200 including the rings. That puts you at the $500 mark. This will leave you enough money left over for a nice sling, and some ammunition to practice with. That is what I would do.

RE: ne suggestion for 30-06 under 575.00 with scope
Sometimes used rifles are the best rifles. I remember when Winchester did away with the claw extractors in their model 70s. It was a scramble to find the older rifles because they WERE better than the new ones. I just don't want to see you end up with some plastic piece of crap when you could have a really nice used rifle that is much higher quality. I know that new is a real pleasure, and that almost everyone would rather have something brand new, but you might be better off getting something older. I don't want to push one way or the other, but I think you should atleast check it out.

RE: ne suggestion for 30-06 under 575.00 with scope
I'm a Savage fan myself, though I've nothing negative to say about the other brands. They are accurate, reliable, and inexpensive (realtively speaking). Wood or Synthetic? I like the looks and feel of wood, but I prefer synthetic in my hunting rifles. I am rough on equipement, deal with alot of weather, and I figure it will stand up to my hunting better.
