The Stevens 200is a GREAT deal and is essentially a Savage....All the reviews give pretty good remarks
Long action for your 30-06 http://www.savagearms.com/st_200long.htm
Or Short action http://www.savagearms.com/st_200short.htm
The suggested Retail Price is $316.00.... so if you know anybody in the business you may be able to buy one and put some very nice glass on it for under your target price of $575.00

For $575 you can getsome pretty decent rifles and scopes put together. The rifles may not be the prettiest but they are just as functional as the higher priced rifles with the fancy stuff.

Remington synthetic is $390 and a Burris fullfield II or Bushnell elite 3200 is $175.

Howa lightning for $340 or hunter for $370 and the same scopes.

A few different models of Savage $300 - $350 with the same scopes

Winchester M70 black shadow for $389 with the same scopes

All of these rifles are made with the same receivers and barrels as their more expensive brothers but do not have the polished steel, engraving, fancy wood stocks, stainles steel, and other little things that add to the cost of a rifle.

The two scopes I listed are every bit the performers of the Leupold VX-II and VX-III but cost a heck of a lot less.

As you can see you can come away with a very nice set up for not a bunch of money. My choice would be the Howa or the Winchester and the Burris fullfield II.

BB has given you a good list, I'd go for the Winchester Black Shadow or the Savage myself! The scopes are good too! I'd add the Simmons Aetec to the list, but nothing any cheaper!

Yes the Atec is another good scope for your needs. When you go to GM ask them if they have the new master series of Atecs in stock yet. They should be about the same price as the older atecs but are suppose to be a much better scope.

Howa makes the Vanguard for Weatherby and then Weatherby puts their own stock on it. Howa also has made rifles for S&W, and a few other other manufacturers.

Howa also has their own line of model 1500 rifles. They are about the best built rifle out there for the ammount of money they cost. They incorperate features on their actions that would cost you a whole lot more money on other rifles. Features such as a vented bolt body in case of gas leakage from a pierced primer or worse. A very substantial m-16 style case extractor, flat bottom receiver with a huge integrated recoil lug. A 100% solid one piece bolt including the handle. One piece bottom metal with a steel floor plate. The same "three rings of steel" design that remington uses.

You will find some of these features on all rifles but you won't find all of them but on the Howa and vanguard.

I just got a Gander Mountain Flyer in the mail it had $50.00 off a gun purchase of $299.00 or more, you may be able upgrade to stainless or pick a better model etc.

I think that you would be able to find a used Remington 700 bolt action in the 270-30-06 range for about $300. Then you could puta nice Leupold VXI 2-7x33 scope on it for about another $200 including the rings. That puts you at the $500 mark. This will leave you enough money left over for a nice sling, and some ammunition to practice with. That is what I would do.

RE: ne suggestion for 30-06 under 575.00 with scope

Sometimes used rifles are the best rifles. I remember when Winchester did away with the claw extractors in their model 70s. It was a scramble to find the older rifles because they WERE better than the new ones. I just don't want to see you end up with some plastic piece of crap when you could have a really nice used rifle that is much higher quality. I know that new is a real pleasure, and that almost everyone would rather have something brand new, but you might be better off getting something older. I don't want to push one way or the other, but I think you should atleast check it out.

I'm a Savage fan myself, though I've nothing negative to say about the other brands. They are accurate, reliable, and inexpensive (realtively speaking). Wood or Synthetic? I like the looks and feel of wood, but I prefer synthetic in my hunting rifles. I am rough on equipement, deal with alot of weather, and I figure it will stand up to my hunting better.
