I finally found the rifle that I wanted to make a "one" gun battery. The rifle in question is a Sako M75 stainless synthetic chambered in 375 H&H. So like the ones before her, I gave it a ride home in my pickup truck.
I had a Zeiss Conquest 6.5 x 20x50 and Zeiss Conquest 3x12x56 with a 30mm tube laying around and opted to mount the latter on the Sako for now. I had to go to other rings than were provided, again for now I used a set of Leupold high rings. This scope doesnt look out of place even with the over sized objective to me
I am going try this combination out for a while and see whether I am going to like it. While I like the #8 reticle I am not comfortable with the eye relieve. Though I havent shot that manyrounds through it, it's quite pleasant to shoof off the bench. The best performing load I shot on it's maiden range voyage consisted of Win case,Fed 215 primer,IMR-4064 and Barnes 270 gr Triple Shock and printed a nice 1"group.

should you decide to trip after cape buffalo or any of the other big five or for that matter eland, zebra, gemsbok, wildebeest etc, that thing will surely do the trick.

Guns just dont get much prettier than that one,,,scope looks good on it! and shoots a dang nice group too. good luck this season

Vapodog, I hope to hunt Africa someday and have a 416 Rigby for the bigger stuffShoot, here in South Texas you can hunt most any african game other than the big five, of course they are behind a tall fence and some will have tags in there ears but that's no fun. This particular rifle isnt set up for the dangerous stuff, has no controlled feed and the detachable magazine can be removed by a push of a button, intended or not[8D]

What's controlled feed? Thats a mighty fine rifle...

God grief man! What do you need a gun that big for in North America, especially South Texas? I could understand for maybe bear or moose but.... and I certainly can't see it being a one gun battery as you say.

That is one purty rifle...not too shabby of agroup either.

The 375 H&H is really a quite versatile cartridge. I know a few guys that use them for most situations. Yes, this fine old cartridge has more power than need for NA game, but it can be easily down loaded if need be. The Hornady 220 gr works very well on deer size game if it isnt driven to fast. I have found that there is less meat damage with these heavier bullets compared to the a lighter ones driven at high velocitessuch as a 140 gr 7mm mag on deer size game.
For elk, a 270 grain bullet can be loaded to shoot as flatas the good ol 30-06 out to 300 yards. That right there makes a fineelk sledge hammer.
Getting up to bigger stuff such as grizzlys, african game, the 375 shines too. Loaded with a good 300 gr bullet it's good for anything.
As far as a "one gun" battery, there's no cartridge that is perfect. I chose the Sako because they have a solid reputation, the stainless, synthetic for durability, the scope for clarity/quality and the caliber for it's versatility.


My opinion is this, the 375 H&H can do it all, it's been around nearly 100 years now and has held it's own.I would rather be a little over powered on game that under powered. I am pretty open minded, what are some other choices out there that are up to the challenge?
