Z is right.
No Z was kidding. A bullet with a SD of .250 is not a varmint bullet. Thats a deer rifle. Damn good one too
.
Damm, finally woke you up. Was wondering when you were going to punch back!:D:D:D

100 grain Sierra Flatbase. Or 100 grain Speer Grand Slam.

OooooK brother Roscoe, why do you like those over the Fed 100gr NP?;)

RE: 243 win deer ammo

Well, my friend, personal experience with the Nosler partitions is that, while they penetrate realibly and always open up; they open up too early and wind up poking a fairly small hole through the middle of the animal. They create what is often referred to as a turnip-shaped wound channel. Both the Sierra flatbase and the Speer Grand Slam open up more slowly, and push a bigger wound channel through the middle of the animal. They may not be as good for shoulder shots or quartering angles; but I don't take these shots with a .243 anyway. Broadside through the ribs they are a good balance of adequate penetration and maximum size wound channel through the vitals.

The longest shot I have ever made on an elk is with the 6MM/284. The 100 grain Sierra flatbase, launched at about3450 fps, hit this big cow elk broadside in the lungs at a ranged 537 yards. She ran about 50 yards and piled up. The bullet blew a broom stick size hole through both lungs and wound up just under the hide on the off side. (Ideal conditions and a good rest, of course)

Anyway, Brother Rebel, as good of a bullet as the Nosler Partitions is - particularly in bigger calibers - I would choose the Speer or Sierra in this instance. Regards. Roscoe

Very good, that's what I was looking for. Thanks Roscoe.

RE: 243 win deer ammo

Well I have used the .243 for most all my kills, for about 20-25 years now.
I've used winchester, corlocks, federal, hornady's. They all have killed and I never wounded or lost one yet.
But I like the performance the Hornady's have shown me. Ive had complete pass throughs on big hogs at 250yds, pass throughs on both shoulders of deer at that distance too. Im currently using the federals loaded with the sierra game king boat tails. We had 6 kills with it last year with about the same expierience, theyre cheaper priced and easier to get, i'll use them again this year andmake my final judgement.

I never used the Hornady's because the accuracy, out of mygun(s), was not as good as the Sierra. Have heard good things about their expansion characteristics, though. One thing about the Sierra's you might not be aware of - the flatbase (Prohunter) bullets are a little tougher than the boattail (Gameking) versions. Regards. Roscoe

RE: 243 win deer ammo

Prolly so, but the deer around here dont get over 150 lbs, maybe in south texas, where I rarely get a chance to go, do they get to 200 lbs. but for 150lb deer and underI like a good expanding bullet. If I were to hunt up north for big deer, or elk, I'd go for a little tougher one for sure.
However, the Hornady's seem to be pretty tough, havent recovered a bullet to look at it though, but they have done a nasty job on deer and hog.
