I'm curious how the 280 is more gun than the 270, or 30-06. They are all based on the same case the 06.

The shoulder was moved forward on the 280 Remington so it couldn't be chambered in the 270 Win.or a 30-06. By doing this the 280 Rem. case will hold a little more powder.

have you considered a 243 its perfect at those ranges on deer sized animals.

The 280 is getting a Bum rap here on the bullet weight. Long before the 7 Mag was even a thought, the 7mm bullets were made to perform in the 7x57 Mauser. As such, all those bullets work even better in the 280. You compare the 270 with its 130, 140 1nd 150 as good deer medicine then say the 280 won't perform with 175 grain bullets. Well how about the 140, 150 and 160 grain bullets in the 280. We are talking deer here. The 7x57 performed very well all over the world with 175 grain bullets. I have used many of them in my old Mauser. Oops the Bank just called and approved my new pick-up. Gotta Go.:DNew to Me that is.

I alwayssuggest that when someone is looking for a first deer rifle they go with a fairly mainstream round with light recoil. Of the rounds Bamabuckhunter is interested in, Iwould go with a 308, but I think a 7mm-08 would served him better.

For deer hunting you would be hard pressed to find anything that kills deer better than a 140gr, 7mm bullet fired from a 7Mag, 280 or 7mm-08 it doesn't really matter. IMO if you need to use a 175gr 7mm bullet for anything then you need a bigger diameter bullet.

For the record I wouldn't sell my A-Bolt in 280Rem for $1000. :D

Different bullets have different intended uses. If you shoot a 7MM rifle and want a bullet of high SD for whatever reason then the 160 and 175 are what you need. I like a bullt in the lower SD per caliber for deer because I get better expansion with lighter bulletr. For deer with the 280 I use the 120 gran Sierra Pro-Hunter. This bullet perfprms very well at about 2700-2800 fps. More velocity would make this bullet a little fragil for deer IMO. I tailor that load for Mule deer at ranges of about 200 yards which most of my shots are. I hunt prairie deer and shots are almost always from 175-225 yards. The first loads I used for big Game in the 7x57 were WW 175 grain RN factory loads. Thet were not real fast but did give better trajectory and velocity that its main rival which at the time was the 30-30 and 32 Win Spec and 35 Remington. I would certainly not argue with the use of the 270 for big game for I believe its one of the best rounds going. However if limited to one and since I reload all of my ammo, I would choose the 280. I admit that you won't find shells for them just anywhere.

So this won't be your only one, apparently you already have one/others.

Amazing you would get so much advise (and bickering between cartridges)without anyone asking or clarifying, "What do you already have?" Cartridge spacing just plain makes sense; otherwise, this is howso many American huntersend up with abatch of rifles that are all essentially equivalent to each other when one looks atthe goal of building a diverse and capable rack of rifles.

So, what all is this "new" rifle going to be added to?
If the answer is nothing, then myrecommendation is the 30-06.
