thanks everyone for the insight! One last question: should there be any markings indicating whether its ADL or BDL or anything else? The only identification markings are "Remington Model 700", ".25-06", and a serial number (which I've sent to Remington asking for history/identification), I've heard the terms "KS", "ADL" and "BDL", but have not seen any such markings on the gun. It appears to be almost unused - hardly a scratch on it, beautiful black color. Can't wait to try it out.

Would someone please help me determine what model this is? Its all black, 24" black barrel, no magazine...loads through the top, father was told at the auction it was a "Varmint" model. If that's true then its not the ADL or BDL and would probably be the VS, correct?

If it has a heavy barrel then it is a VS. If it is all black and has a sporter weight barrel than it is an ADL. Also the VS has a blackish-blueish-grayish stock with a spider web design. From your description of the gun being all black, I bet its an ADL.
