I would use the 30-30 Win if that was the most powerful rifle I owned, and used a 150 gr. Barnes XFN, or 170 gr. Nosler Partition RN. Good luck.

I shot my first elk with a 30-30. I killed that cow with one shot. I still do not believe a 30-30 is the right tool for the job. I do not ever plan on hunting elk with my 30-30 again. I have better rifles for that job.

At the ranges you are talking about, You better believe it. At those ranges the 30-30 will kill an elk evry bit as fast as any other rifle. You can bet there have been thousands of elk taken with the 30-30. Most with the Model 94 as it has been popular throughout the west for longer than most of us have ben around.. 170 grain Hornady Flat point. My grandpa shot lots of winter meat including elk with an old 44-40 lever gun. I just looked at that old gun about a month ago. There were still shells in the butt stock shell holder. He shot most of his game hunting horse back.

I would use my winchester 30-30 if that's all I had, with a ballistic tip.

I would consider it...but ONLY with a 170 grain, premium quality bullet...and ONLY out to a maximum of 100 yards.

Works for me! If all I had was a 30/30, give me some Federal Premium ammo with that 170gr. Nosler Part. bullet, and keep the range to a max. of 100yds.

Only if it was the most powerful rifle I could get my paws on at the time....

Plenty of elk, and even a few grizzly bears, have been taken with the .30/30! And the .250 Savage, as well.

I would for sure cause that rifle has enough power for and elk shot out to that range as long as you make a good bullet placement it willgo down.
