If you only had one gun, what would it be??
Pheonix MA had a great questiona bout what accessory aside from knife and gun would you take?
But here is another question: You are going to be in the woods for, say a month! You have basic camping gear (Pack, tarp, fire, knife, cord, blanket or sleeping bag, etc.) You can only have one weapon. WHAT WOULD YOU TAKE? For me it would be a .22 mag rifle with a 2 or 4x scope but with iron sights as a back up. With this rig you could put small game on the table (squirrels, rabbits, possum, etc.). I have even killed snapping turtles with mine (GOOD EATING!!!). I have even heard of people shooting top water fish with a .22 but I have never done it myself. But you could also kill up to dear size game with it. My uncle in Mexico has killed dozens of deer with a .22 LR . It is difficult for Mexicans to legally own a centerfire. Of course this may not be legal or even fully humain, but this is a thoretical situation. Second choice would be a 12 or 20 guage shotgun with a combination of rifled slugs, and varying sized shot shells. okcmco |
RE: If you only had one gun, what would it be??
Model 7600 30-06.
|
RE: If you only had one gun, what would it be??
.223 all the way. they shoot straight andhave a nice usablerange limit. and you can shoot just about anything from a rabbit to a deerwith the right bullet.:)

RE: If you only had one gun, what would it be??
I agree with a 12ga, for EVERYTHING why would you not want one? A couple handfuls of different ammo and you are set for anything from topwater fish (I once shot catfish with a 38 snubbie while they fed on thrown out fish food! :D ) too Grizzly deterance. If the difference between eating or going hungry depends on my killing ANYTHING then you can bet I want the scattergun!
;) RA |
RE: If you only had one gun, what would it be??
22mag or 12ga... maybe a over/under 12ga/22mag=)
|
RE: If you only had one gun, what would it be??
.22 LR
It will put food on the fire. |
RE: If you only had one gun, what would it be??
i would probably have a rem. 700 bdl in 30-06 with probably a 3-9 scope with the iron sights on it just in case something happened to the scope. with all of the different types of ammo so it can put anything on the table that i want ;):D

RE: If you only had one gun, what would it be??
Simple. My converted Yugo M48 rifle....and a good supply of my handloaded ammunition.
|
RE: If you only had one gun, what would it be??
In Reply to ShoNuff. Good one. I didn't even think about a combo over and under in .22 mag/12Guage, or even .22/20 gge. Maybe that little lightweight Scout combo gun from Springfield Armoury.
Good one okcmco |
RE: If you only had one gun, what would it be??
I have to agree with Red, the 12 ga. would be the way to go.
|
RE: If you only had one gun, what would it be??
Ruger M77 MK II all weather 30-06 hands down, with a Bushnell Elite 4200 2.5-10x40 scope with flip open scope caps.

RE: If you only had one gun, what would it be??
Ok, is this a dessert island were trapped on here? If it is, I will take any old gun so long as the swimsuit model stranded there with mewill wear coconut lingerie. EJ

RE: If you only had one gun, what would it be??
For up to a month or two, give me a Marlin 30/30 and couple boxes of ammo. For more extended periods I'd want a 22LR, and a brick of shells.
|
RE: If you only had one gun, what would it be??
if I only had one it would be my Winchester M-70 30-06 I just got the gun a while back and like it more than any other gun.
|
RE: If you only had one gun, what would it be??
.30 .30 or 12ga
|
RE: If you only had one gun, what would it be??
I am with James B 30-06. and that pump is great for follow up shots.
|
RE: If you only had one gun, what would it be??
My Ruger Mini-14 anda can full of ammo.
|
RE: If you only had one gun, what would it be??
First choice would be one of the Savage O/U, in .22 LR and either .410 or 20 bore. Second choice would be my Ruger single action in .32 H&R. I could eat well with either.
Don't discount the .22 for fishing OR killing (not hunting) deer. Have a friend who used to fish his catfish pond with a S&W K-22. He'd toss out a handful of feed, and shoot them in the head, then scoop 'em up with a dip net. Mrs. Charley's grandfather killed a couple of boxcar loads of whitetails during his life with a single shot Mossberg .22. |
RE: If you only had one gun, what would it be??
Only one gun?! [:@]
Then I'm not going. :D |
RE: If you only had one gun, what would it be??
Definetely a 12 gauge
|
RE: If you only had one gun, what would it be??
definatly 12 gauge pump, with slugs, buckshot, and bird loads
|
RE: If you only had one gun, what would it be??
Been there done that, (more than once) and of course i'd take my "drilling"!!
My drilling does it all, side by side shotgun, with high powered rifle under. AND, i have Krieghoff insert bbls to slide in the shot bbl. to shoot 22lr and also 22 Win. mag.... In case youdon't know about them, Krieghoff insert bbls shoot as good as a "quality" bolt action rifle!! Also besides the open sights (that pop up when you choose the rifle bbl.)the scope is in quick attach"claw mounts" that always rezero's the scope when you snap in on. It also has interchangeable choke tubes. I've shot all kinds of small and big game on hunts useing this "one gun" for everything, and it weights just 7 pounds.... :>)) Drilling Man |
RE: If you only had one gun, what would it be??
.340 Wby. Mag. Good luck.
|
RE: If you only had one gun, what would it be??
Those of us who named centrefire weapons might be a little hungry at times, but no more so than with any other choice. With the addition of fishing gear (a rather more certain way of gathering food than hunting, anyway)....none of us should be too hungry. I definitely would also pack fishing gear...I can't speak for the others.
|
RE: If you only had one gun, what would it be??
My Remington 870 with the 26" smoothbore barrel. Shoot rifled slugs and shot through it.
|
RE: If you only had one gun, what would it be??
As much as it would kill me to have only one weapon, I'd opt for a 12 gauge pump. It just give so many options (except for long distance shooting) that it seems to make the most sense.

...You are going to be in the woods for, say a month! You have basic camping gear (Pack, tarp, fire, knife, cord, blanket or sleeping bag, etc.) You can only have one weapon. WHAT WOULD YOU TAKE?... I'd still opt for a Marlin 30/30, or maybe a lightweight bolt action carbine in 223Rem., both scoped of course, and with backup iron sights. Laminated or synthetic stock on the bolt action. Stainless steel on both if available (but not shiney). Oh well, just my .02 :D |

GOOD POINT, Virginia 7 I must admit I was only responding to the title of the thread and didn't read the premise. With that premise in mind I would probably take a featherweight Savage 99 in22-250. |
RE: If you only had one gun, what would it be??
Maybe I made the wrong assumption about the question but I was under the impression that whatever gun you chose is what you had to feed yourself with. All you guys sayin "centerfires" would be AWFULLY hungry if you couldn't shoot those fish, birds or small game. What you gonna do with those big game animals? Leave them lying in the weeds to attract other problems and rot?
I don't think you would want to take to many squirrels that you HAD to eat with a 30/06!!! ;) RA |
RE: If you only had one gun, what would it be??
i would probably have a rem. 700 bdl in.300 (my current gun) and with the iron sights( i currently have them too)
|
RE: If you only had one gun, what would it be??
12 gauge shot gun. Remington 870 with a smooth slug barrel and iron sights.
|
RE: If you only had one gun, what would it be??
id take a 45caliber/410shotshell revolver and a whole bunch off ammo. itd be good for small game varmints up to deer size.

RE: If you only had one gun, what would it be??
My whole point in the question was that you are in a sort of survival situation (maybe even self imposed.) and you gun would feed you. My choice of a .22 mag rifle was based on the foolowing things. It is light and handy You could always have it with you giving you abetter chance of tarets of oppurtunity. How may times have you been walking to your stand or blind and you kicked up a rabbit or saw alot of sqirrels? I think rimfires have probably accounted for much more game than centerfires, albeit probably not more sheer poundage of game.
Also with a rimfire you could take ALOT of ammo which I like because I Miss alot LOL. CMA3366a had agood suggestion with a CZ 427 in 22 hornet. Didn't think of that one but it is about a perfect choice. |
RE: If you only had one gun, what would it be??
I would take my marlin 1894 in 357 magnum with peep sights. This gun is light and carrys easily. I can carry lots of ammo on me and ths magazine holds 10 rds.
|
RE: If you only had one gun, what would it be??
Ruger #1 .270, 5 180 grain cartridges, 5 110 grain cartridges, and 2 150 grain cartridges. The 110's are light enough to take off a squirels head, the 150's work for yotes and deer, and the 180's will take down a moose if you hit it in the right spot.

RE: If you only had one gun, what would it be??
I think that if you are going to take a center fire rifle I'm under the opinion that it should be a .223 Remington, and you should use FMJ ammunition. This would give clean holes in all game, and while it may not give the fastest kill, it will certainly preserve more meat on smaller animals. The .223 Remington is not the most powerful cartridge on the planet, but I know that it can kill the largest game, especially in real life situations where you throw trophy collecting out the window. As far as the make up of the rifle itself I would pick a sturdy bolt action with a synthetic stock and a stainless barrel. There would be iron sights on the barrel, but I would also advocate a good quality fixed power scope. If you looked at something like a Remington Model Seven stainless synthetic with a Leupold FX model scope I really don't think that you could go wrong.

RE: If you only had one gun, what would it be??
Thats a loaded question (pun intended). I t toatlly depends where you live. If you were in say...Alaska, a 22 cal would be susbsitance alright....subsistance for the bears and wolves. I would take a marlin guide gun in 45-70.
|
RE: If you only had one gun, what would it be??
bolt action .308
|
RE: If you only had one gun, what would it be??
My Springfield M1A is all I need.
