RE: 25-06 powerfull enough for deer

I guess what I'm referring to is shooting lots of varmints in a single day. The .243 has enough recoil to start to bother most folks after 75 or 80 shots. Also jumps enough after the shot to make it difficult to see the bullet impact. Great for windy days or for very long range shooting, though - and if you can only affort one gun for varmints and medium big game, the .243 is a great choice. The .25-06 is a waste for smaller varmints, IMO. Bigger ones like coyotes and bobcats, where you don't fire a lot of shots in a day - OK. But if you are pelt hunting, I still prefer the bigger .22 CF calibers. 6MM and .257 varmint bullets can leave big exit holes.

I plan to buy a 25-06 barrel for my encore rifle as well.
I'll use it as an alternative for 'lopes and as a varmint cartridge.

The 25-06 will kill any deer in any situation as well as the 270 or 30-06 and is a better varmint cartridge than either.

This is going to sound insensative but...............

Are we actually starting to ask if the 25-06 is powerful enough for deer? [&:]

Before you know it we will be asking if the 300 Win. mag. is enough gun for deer.

This is starting to get just alittle ridiculous. This caliber and many like are more then enough for deer size game. We seem to have a group of people who use caliber size to makeup for poor shooting skills. What we need here is a site that they can print off targets too practice with.

zrexpilot I know your a .243 fanand I won't cut down your favorite round BUT your statement just don't cut it. The 25-06 with its heavier bullets holds more down range energy for deer sized game. As for varmits the 25.06 will push equal weight bullets faster & flatter. Yes the .243 has lighter bullets which itcan push to about the same speed .
Yes the .243 is a good round but it can not compare to the 25-06 as the game approaches deer sized.

I pretty much agree with Roskoe and some of the others. The 25-06 is a great deer cartridge, and with a 115 to 120 grain bullet, better suited for that role than a 6 mm projectile. It works on varmints, but it isn't something you want to spend the whole day shooting. And ammo gets a little bit expensive when you do a whole lot of shooting.

For varmints, get a .22 CF. Something along the lines of a .223 or .22-250. When it comes to serious varminting and target shooting, they are hard to beat. They are flat shooting with very minimal recoil, and the barrels don't get as hot as quick.

Get it..you won't regret it. As already stated the 2506 is a superb deer sized caliber and doubles off nicely as a light use varmiter as well.
