My vote goes to Ruger.

I have owned both the 700 and the 77Mk II. I personally like the Ruger action better. It is more rugged and less complex than the Remington and it is very similar to the Mauser action. The trigger is the only thing I don't like about Ruger, I have measured poundages between 4.5lbs and 7lbs. The trigger is however extremely simple and not hard to work down to 3 pounds with very little creep. A gunsmith would charge about $50 for the trigger job but I did mine myself in about 30 minutes. The bases are part of the receiver and will never come loose and the rings lock in tight, which come with the rifle. My Ruger rifles two 77s and one #1 shoot sub MOA at 100 yards along with about 3 of my friends rifles in calibers ranging from .223 to 300 WSM. I also think that Ruger puts some of the nicest walnut stocks on their rifles compared to other companies.

By the time you add the rings and bases to the price of a Remington 700 you can get the Ruger with a trigger job, andthe supplied rings cheaper.

Another vote for Remington, but the older m77 rugers are shooters too.

My newer Rugers shoot as well or better than my older ones. Out of about ten Rugers that I have had, only one shot really bad with one other being a so-so shooter.

I had an older Ruger M-77 in .30-06. The trigger was terrible and the accuracy suffered. I sold it. I now have 2 Remington 700 BDL's that required about 15 minutes each to adjust the triggers to perfection. When the planets are in perfect alignment, they will both shoot 1 M.O.A . on a good daywith factory ammo. The Rugers are rugged, but I'll take a Remington anyday.

I think that they are both very very close is reliability and quality.Except the rugers all have spring loading and remington you can have clips which are much more convenient. Also the remington seem to have a better out of the box accuracy, and the ruger rifles are know to have much more recoil. But that is just if recoil bothers a person or not.put it this way cthough if u like sort of old style go for ruger or if u like a little bit more modern technology go with the remington it is all up to a person point of view and everyones point of veiw is different.
