try this for ice fishing
I bought a fishfinder just for ice fishing I use it to tell the depth of the water the lake where i fish has a sand bar out in the middle so we had to drill a mess of holes to find it sometimes and trout and perch seemed to hang out at different depths so I got the fish finder hooked it up to a 12 volt lawn tractor battery and take and pour water on top of the ice put the tranducer on the wet spot and it reads right thru the ice no more wasted drilling how many times went to swamp pond drilled hole foundout only about three feet deep works great to find them hidden channels oh yeah we only got a hand auger heard the power ones scare fish away <img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>

Good tip. I know of a guy who mounted the Depth finder to the inside of a five gallon pale with the transducer mounted under antifreeze at the bottom. All you have to do then is set the thing down I guess. He was saying it worked good.
