Favorite fish to catch???

Just wanting to get something started, what is your favorite fish, to fish for and catch?

RE: Favorite fish to catch???

Smallmouth Bass for me!!!:D Pound for pound the best fighting fish there is!! Nothing like a lake that's like glass just before sunset and quietly skipping a topwater bait across the water to see a smallie explode on it. BBRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR gives me the goosebumps.

RE: Favorite fish to catch???

trout and catfish here.....trout are the prettiest fish that swims....and they are fun to catch.....and smarter them most fish........catfish are about the ugliest fish that swims and they get huge......and id bet a 3lb catfish is stronger then a 3lb smallie!! smallies are fun to catch but nothing compared to a cat....thrashing its head...rolling trying to run to the depths where it came from.....once i caught a 30 inch flathead from shore...i got it close to the shore and it rolled thrashed its head flipped its tail and took off....absolutely soaked me when he whipped his tail.....i played him brought him back up had him beached in the shallows and he did it again....only closer.....i got soaked again......then finally i got him in......it was crazy.....after the trout stop feeding heavily i go right into catfishing....nothing like the warm summer nights sitting along the river...lantern hissing....then WHAM!! your rod almost flys in the water.......the fight is on!!! i love it.....i used to love smallie fishing when i was younger.......and still do.....but trout and catfish are my favorites....

RE: Favorite fish to catch???

I personally love walleye fishing. I fish a river system here in saskatchewan that is known across canada for producing big eyes. The spot is about an hour from my farm so i usually cut a deal with the bait shop there and they keep my boat in their compound all summer. There is nothin like getting off work at 5 pm and driving up there with a few buds and fishing that night and camping out for the night. Each time we go out fishing at least one person in the boat lands a walleye over 7 pounds so there are some real lunkers. We usually keep a few smaller guys and pull up onto the bank for a shore lunch. That is the best fish you will ever taste is fresh caught walleye. I guess the the fish there are high in mercury but i'm not glowing too much yet so i'll keep on fishin and eating the walleyes. here is a pic of me a few years ago fishing the saskatchewan river with a nice walleye..

Rite On NY Bowhunter, Smallmouth bass are by far the toughest pound for pound fish to catch. Southern Largemouth bass are fun as well.

RE: Favorite fish to catch???

Big wild trout........flowing water.........dry flies don't hurt. ;)

#2 would be river Smallmouth Bass, man are they a good time on a fly rod. It helps that I am fortunate to live minutes away from maybe the premier Smallmouth River in the world.

Muskies would have to be my favorite, but where i live they are far and few between. So I would have to say pickerel we got them here arond 25-30 inches like fighting little muskies.

Honorable mentions: Bass, channels, and carp

and id bet a 3lb catfish is stronger then a 3lb smallie!!
Lol are you serious Mauser??;)

Matt / PA 03-24-2004 09:40 AM

RE: Favorite fish to catch???

Mauser,
If you tied a 3lb Smallie to the tail of a 3lb catfish, the Smallmouth would take that catfish for the ride of it's life.[:-]:D

It would look like somebody skipping a rock across the water.;)

Some people are lucky enough to live out west and they can hunt elk every year and I'm lucky enough to live in the north east so I can fish giant bluefin tuna every year!
Tie your smally and catfish to his tail ;)

Pace Maker.......well that's not fair.
I'm not sure I'd tie a giant bluefin tuna to the trailer hitch of my 4cyl. Nissan Pickup truck pointing the other direction?;)

LOL bet it would be quite a battle!!

Let's remember we're talking about pound for pound. If you compare apples to apples Mr. smallmouth holds up to anything (pound for pound)

Tie your smally and catfish to his tail
That's like putting a featherweight in the ring with Lennox Lewis.

Have to put my vote in for native trout for my favorite. Caught 17 sunday on my 3# rod one right at 4lbs. Nothing like a big native rainbow in these fast flowing mountian streams on a light weight fly rod.

While I love to fish for catfish, I have to say that nothing can compair to the way a steelhead fights, then Salmon then catfish. I just dont see the big thrill with bass, yet thats what ALL the fishing shows seem to be centered on

My favorite fish to catch are walleye, catfish and muskie for they'll fight really hard sometime harder then bass.:D

RE: Favorite fish to catch???

Well since i started this i will say in Freshwater that i like to catch steelhead and smallmoth the best, the are both powerful, acrobatic and beautiful fish to catch. I like anything that will pull my line, although saltwater fish, pound for pound, will beat the SH*t out of any freshwater fish i have ever caught. My fav saltwater fish to catch would have to be permit, grouper and barracuda. I still have a lot of species to catch, so give me another year and my opinion could change!!!

RE: Favorite fish to catch???

I love inshore saltwater fishing. I call it pot fishing because I just bring tackle for everything and catch whatever I can. I might end up starting to fish for spade fish and switch to trout, or from flounder to spot tail.

I love to fish for just about anything on a fly rod, and stripers are hard to beat overall.

Esox Lucius (Nothern Pike) and Esox Masquinongy (Muskellunge) you can't beat those big old 40-50 inch toothy critters and they put up some of the greatest fights in freshwater. There's just somthing about seeing a 20-30 pound fish launch it's self upwards of 6 feet out of the water twisting, spinning and flipping in mad frenzy trying to throw the hooks. It's amazing even the little ones under 40 inches can fit like like a rabid bulldog on speed. I love em to death!!

My all time favorite is Bream Its what most people catch there first time out as little kids and i still have fun with them nothing makes me smile like watching a bobber disappear and catching a bream you can barley wrap your hand around there easy to catch there plentiful, all you need is a bream buster and a worm and your set.

You said it man, these 2 would have to be my favorite, however I will have to choose the Pike on a regular basis(since that is all we have here in Sask.) Either way you slice running cranks, jigs flies or topwater they are great action.

Favorite freshwater fish to eat is walleye, pike, perch, burbot and then trout. Saltwater most are delish!
