Default Suckers are Running

I took my boy and his buddy sucker fishing Saturday, we had a blast! How many other fish species can you catch 20 - 5# fish in a couple hours. We canned some, we pickled some and I am going to smoke three of them. The rest I processed into dog food. For people that think they are not good, you should try some spring caught Red Horse suckers, they're delicious.

Never fished for suckers intentionally. We always caught a bunch when I grew up in CO while trout fishing. We just turned most of them loose but sometimes cut strip bait out of them for Lake Trout. I've heard about people catching them and canning them but never tried it myself.

They have lots of bones, thats why we always canned or pickled them, so the bones get soft. Biologists study suckers to see how clean a waterway is as they are a pretty clean fish and won't tolerate polluted water. In early spring there flesh is delicious.

I never tried them either and as a young fella I used to give a few each spring to an elderly couple who stated that they were very boney but a good fish to eat in the spring.. We actually thought they ate the eggs or something..
