A Steelhead is a Lake-run Rainbow trout. They are in the salmnoid family but are a different strain. They reside in big freshwater lakes or oceans and swim the tributaries during times of spawning. Unlinke Salmon, Steelhead do not die after spawning and may spawn several times upon release, if caught.

Even within the Steelhead species there are many different strains, etc.

Thanks for the info. I remember fishing for steelhead in Alaska and for some reason, I thought they were Salmon. Guess I looked like an idiot to all the people I told the stories too, haha.
