HOT DAWG DAYS ...NEED HELP

oK guys..I'm starting to get frustrated..the summer day sre here and I ain't catchin much except a sunburn..Temperatures....daily over 100 degrees.

Things triedbut don't seem to work for mein the summer..

1. Shiners...ok for for the 1st hour..that's it..mostly small ones

2. Fishng the lunar calander ..not working

3. Flipping..ok for the first hour..nothing over 2 pounds..maybe one fish

4. Horny Toad..not wotking at all lately.

5. Crankbaits...nothing

6.Spinner baits...on for the first hour..maybe 2 fish 2 pounders

7. Fishing deep structure..worming..nothing over 2 pounds maybe one fish

8. Rooster Tail...nothing

9. Fluke ..nothing...

10-..Jig..nothing

11. Topwater..nothing.

I have no lights on my trailor or I'd be going in the evening..the pinion rack{ Steering}went out so my truck is in the shop..I plan to get a new pig tail so my lights will work..The evening might be the way to go..

Heres what my area is like...

Hydrilla islands...with slopes down to 13-25 feet..
Shoreline..some cat tails ,,and hydrillas
mostly islands..it's an old phosphate mine{ Pits} there is no creek, or stream flowing..water is still

RE: HOT DAWG DAYS ...NEED HELP

I recently nought a bag of Senko's for the very same reason. Supposedly, they are good lures to drop around lilly pads and structures. Though I havent tried them yet, I am planning to shortly. Read up on them and check them out, they may be your ticket to getting out of the slump.

RE: HOT DAWG DAYS ...NEED HELP

Up North here, we have very 100+ degree days. This week is calling for two 90 degree days. Tougher fishing. Once the water near the shoreline (lillies, hydrilla, included) reaches about 67+ degrees I find that I catch much fewer fish. Once it gets to this temperature I don't even fish it.

During these periods I catch many less fish, and they are mostly smaller.

The only thing I have found to catch bigger fish is fishing deepr water/cooler temperatures.

I do this by fishing the large drops 6 FOW to 20'something FOW.

OR

By fishing springs or feeder creeks in which bring cooler water into the body of water I am fishing. This goes for any type of fishing (Trout, Salmanoids, Small and Largemouth Bass). Not only does it keep the water temperature down but it is constantly brining new forage into the water for the fish to feed.

Good luck C7.

Thanks fellows...

We have no running water...just big pits filled up..

I'm thinking the fish may bite after the temps drop in the evenings a few degrees.I'm realy feeling in my heart that may be the way to go...fish right into the first 15 minutes of dark..After that the lake is filled with gators..then I gotta go.

Negatives...
A.Where I fish is a popular hang out for gangs after dark..[&o]I've got a concealed weapon's permit but still don't want to use it..[&o]

B. Presently I need a new pig tail for my truck..I have no running lights..to the boat.although I could run a jumper to the trolling motor battery..

Buckhunter..there is no running water..[&o]I beleive you are correct though about going deep..One older fellow tells me he simply drifts 2 Carolina Rigged Worms all morning in the deep and generally gets one good fish. If we can get a breeze I will try that..

RE: HOT DAWG DAYS ...NEED HELP

c7, you need to fish deep islands or structure in the morning and the way you usually fish in the evenings when it starts to cool off.Try the old carolina rig with 1/2 ounce weight and a really sharp hook and you will catch a lot of fish like I done 2 day. you need to use a medium heavy rod with 15 lb. mono , thats the best combo.

Oneshot7 06-22-2009 12:22 PM

RE: HOT DAWG DAYS ...NEED HELP

Senko or Dinger fished reaaaaaal slow or a fluke, my bites have been coming right at dark here lately.

"my bites have been coming right at dark here lately. "
Oneshot7
BINGO!!
I'm thinking that too..when the skeeters start hitting the water..small fish go for them..and big fish go for the small fish.[8D]
I appreciate all the replies..and yes...dragging a Carolina Rig in deep is a very good bet indeed.which is probably the best thing for day time fishing

HOWEVER; for these 100 degree days..I think when the truck gets out of the shop..I'll be fishing the last hour of the day..my wife suggested this last month.:eek:I should have listened..That drop of 10 degrees should activate the fish as well...Horny Toad might even work..but I'd bet a slow rubber worm would be best.;)crawling up the islands of hydrilla...

I didn't know Florida got that hot. Here in Kansas we are starting summer off with a bang, our 7 day forecast is showing the coolest day at 98.

My suggestion would be to take up bluegill fishing since they never seem to slow down. Or find a nice comfortable recliner in the air conditioning.

RE: HOT DAWG DAYS ...NEED HELP

Hot summer days? Sorry we have not had anyhere.. Just rain, rain, and more rain is all we have been getting.. During our hot summer months when fishing is slow, I look for under water structure that is down deep. I like to just set there and jig off the bottom. Although it is slow once you find where the big fish is at they will bite somewhat. They tend to feel like little fish tapping away at the jig. Just make sure you set the hook at the right time. You can still get some big ones that way up here anyways..

May I also suggest using a big umbrella and a fan wired to your trolling motor battery, may make it a lil' more tolerable.:D

On days when the temps are going to be in the 100+ range, I fish topwater very early in the morning and late in the evening. Usually a Heddon torpedo or a frog. During the middle of the day, try bluegill or catfish, because the bass aren't doing much.

If the temperature gets over the 110+ range, even the bluegill and catfish start slowing.

RE: HOT DAWG DAYS ...NEED HELP

Going out in 1 hour and 10 minutes with my neigbor ...
My plan..

Well, first when I take someone in the small boat I only take spinning rods..for I don't hook them..I'm taking 2 rods..
Oneis a medium heavy 6 1/2 foot Team Diawa ..Symetric Reel 12 pound Trilene..with Horny Toad...will change to a rubber worm later..Christmas Tree Gambler Ribbon Tail 7 inches...may go toa jig..decisions .decisions.[8D]

Number 2 rod..Garcia Cardinal 104..12 pound test..Trilene with a 6 1/2 foot medium Fenwick..1/2 ounce White/chartrueseTerminator..may switch to 1/8ounce later

Yesterday..the fish were turned off..but I was fishing a new spot..This morning..I'm going to my regular spot..hydrilla islands..drop offs of 15 foot-25 foot...

You should do ok around the drop if you know what depth they are holding at. Although I must admit I keep forgeting about all that hydrilla you have down there. We only have a little bit of that up here..

We both missed 2..[&:]My first one ..she ran I felt fish and 7 inches of the worm was in the fishes gut because I only had 1 inch of worm when I reeled in my line. However; we found the fish;) next week supposed to be the week:)Mon.-Sat.

RE: HOT DAWG DAYS ...NEED HELP

It was weird man..I took out my neighbor..Kevin..he was using a typical topwater to no advail. Before we quit I said,"I have one more place a topwater may work."

I cast in an area that was total hydrilla and about 3 feet deep..I got a small boil..I waited...nothing..[&o]my line didn't move or nothing..I said,"Kevin ,your supposed to let him take it..like a rubber worm." After 5 seconds I reeled in the slack to start the swishing of the Horny Toad again..Well, lo and behold ..the fish had the toad all the time swimming toward the boooat..[:-]SO I reeled in fast and Set the hook....I yelled "good fish man....get the net ...hurry man!!!" and.safely in the boat.:)..she went..

Thanks gangly..I needed one or Horny Rod was going to retire real soon.,[8D]

Next week is a good week to use a Horny Toad every morning..they should be feeding real good

RE: HOT DAWG DAYS ...NEED HELP

[ul][*]Thanks Phil,
Here's my summer strategy...
Two rods..I think the Carolina Rig has opened alot of possiblities for me..I'm glad I didn't sell my two 7 foot medium heavies..Drifting a fluke or worm can catch a 10 pounder..

One7 ' Baitcaster Med. Rod.for ...The Horny Toad has got the most big bass for me this year..so that will stay put..

One Spinning Rod..When fish are jumping ...nothing beats a Rooster Tail and is my 2nd place lure for boating bass over 5 pounds..

Two Spinnning Rods..If all fails I have 2 shiner rods rigged and ready..

One 6 1/2 foot Baitcaster..I also will keep a Terminator on..I've never did real good with BIG BASS but I ran into a man 2 weeks ago that has boated over 25 ten pounders with that lure..I will use this rod to switch over to crankbaits sometimes..

One 6 1/2 foot baitcaster..And last but not least..I got my Texas Worm Rod..for flipping, pitching, jigging and casting.

That is my set up for the summer.. So I will carry 6 rods with me all the time..When I shiner fish the Carolinas stay home and when I Carolina Fish the shiner rods stay home.
Phil..I hope ya get a moose this year.. [/ul]

RE: HOT DAWG DAYS ...NEED HELP

Try a Texas rig with a compact bait, and peg a HEAVY sinker (1 oz or more). Load it up with megastrike (makes it slippery), and PUNCH the bait through the middle of the grass. The biggest bass in the lake will be in the weeds, not just on the edges or on top.

Chuck7 06-27-2009 11:55 PM

RE: HOT DAWG DAYS ...NEED HELP

Thanks Josh..
Josh..don't you worry about the bass when he picks up that heavy weight ..thinking thebait is too heavy to be a real bait..?

Chuck ,I would pitch a jig under a dock it ha sproven effective for me the past few days.

We hae no docks..;)I fish old phosphate pits..:)
Basically big holes in the earth...The islands are the dirt mounds..

Hey 9 bass on a hot day is not bad..I'm very happy..I do know what would be good for my new spot though for artificail..a gold black back Rapala..

Good going Chuck!, was you fishing them down deep along a drop off? Or just drawing it threw some of those weeds?

Chuck7 06-29-2009 11:48 PM

RE: HOT DAWG DAYS ...NEED HELP

hey Phil..
Here's what I did..

I emptied my tackle bag of all lures so I would stay focused..Goal was to fish 2 shiner rods and read my Bible while waiting. I drove to the local tackle shop to get one dozen medium shiners ..$11.50..The lady likes me and gave me an extra dozen.;)She does that alot..:)I arrived on the lake at 5:55 AM and I drove to a deep 12 foot spot between to hydrilla islands. The lady also learned we've been catching bass on Horny Toads and is sending my fishing report to the newspaper..I'll see if it's in Thursday's paper.

6:05 ..I position my boat in the 12 foot area with the wind...between two islands of rocky hydrilla..I cast out my 2 shiners...in the 12 area..I use a slip bobber..with bobber stop to adjust height accordingly...and beganreading St.John chapter 1...Right away one bobber disappears and the rod is doubled..I gently put the pressure on and the fight is on..the bass slapped water on the pages of my Bible..:(
i boated the 5 3/4 ounce bass
up until 8:00 I caught 5 more and lost about 2 nothing over 2 1/2 All the bass were very plump...
so now I have 6.

8:15 I go back to the clear pit that is 13 - 16 foot..
I caught one dink..that makes number 7. drifting down the middle slowly.
I go back to the first spot 12 foot area between the 2 islands..and I lose 2

9:45 I head toward my Explorer Sport..and stop by a drop off by an isolated island..12 foot deep ..nothing..

10:15The spirit within metells me to try anisolated pond in the woods..only 5 minutes away from my Explorer..a shaded area..in the woods ..as you suggested Phil.;)It's
only about8 foot at the deepest and hydrilla mats everywhere..lots of boulders and hydrilla mats...with some cat tails on the edges...and a great big gator.:D

10:30 ..I settled in and threw two fresh shiners in the middle while I tried reading the last chapter for the day John chapter 5. At 10:45 my rod tip is dancing and the bobber is gone..I grab the rod but gently lift and it feels like I'm hung..I play tug a war and let the bass win..A hefty 4 pounder explodes out of the water ..makes 3 runs pulling the drag..I was surprized it was only 4 pounds even ..She fought harder than the first one.number 8

11:00 I'm interupted from my reading as one of my shiners starts dancing on the water swimming away from something..and KA SPLASH...the biggest and loudest blow up I've ever had in my life..[:-]scared the crap out of me..I grabbed the rod to quick..[&o]because with shiner fishing you have to let them run a little..and I missed her..probably my ten pounder.I'll be back if it don't rain this morning

11:30 one of the last shiners...bobber slowly disappears and I boat a nice fiesty 3 pounder ..number 9

Great Day..:D
Thanks for replying Phil.
Weight of best 5 fish..;)17pounds .12 ounces

Phil from Maine 06-30-2009 02:32 AM

RE: HOT DAWG DAYS ...NEED HELP

That sounds like a great day with all that hot weather you have been having down there.:) But those gators swiming around with me fishing.. Nah I do not think so I would most likely be outa there really quickly. It would be real hard for me to fish knowing that I could very well be the bait..;)

I wish you could send a little up this way. All it's been doping here is raining every day now for almost 2 weeks and more coming today. [>:] Our streams and rivers are at flood stage for the ones that haven't yet flooded and our lakes are in the same situation right now. High water every where and the temps are hanging around the mid 60s. I do not mind the temps that bad but I surely would like a few days of sun up here..

Anyways you keep at them and you just might be able to haul that 10 pound hawg up out of there.. I may even have to go get my self a few frogs and give the bass a try. That way i can fish from shore so when it starts raining i can get back in the truck.;)
