If you can only afford one rod...I'd go to Walmart and get a medium action 6 1/2 foot rod..
either a Lightning Rod or Ugly Stick
35.00
Then, I'd buy the Garcia Cardinal model 104 open faced spinning reel...35.00

Chucks right, the lightning rod and ugly stick are hard to beat for the money, you might also check out BPS fathers day sale they have some good deals on combo's...as far as a baitcaster, i love them, other than pan-fishing its all i use, some people hate them, and there is a learning curve, you won't just pick it up and everything be perfect, but once you get used to it you'll love it, at least i do[:-]
, but then again i been using them for 35+ years[:-]

you can buy bait-casting reels from 35 to well over 600$ the reels i use are still under a 100, they don't have a lot of the fancy stuff some of these newer reels have, but there simple and easy to work on and get parts, i have some that are 25+ years old and still in use
BTW, i use ABU/Garcia 4500/4600's although i would not recomend these as a first baitcaster, as they don't have magnetic braking and are lacking alot of the bells and whistles the newer style reels have...

Not unless you musky fish with suckers. I would recommend a light/medium-light action St. Croix rod and a smaller spinning reel.

No doubt..a spinning can be used for anything
A baitcaster has it limits..
