The Garcia baitcasting reels are nice, I have a few myself, I haven't used the New Rapala rods yet so I couldn't tell ya weather they are good or not, but they look like they might be Ok. What Length of rod did you get?, and what size real 5500? or a 6500? maybe..?
For stained water use noisy, loud, lures, like jointed crank baits and inline topwaters, depending on how dark the water is, I might stay away from "walk the dog" Type topwaters sometimes they can be hard for the fish to zero in on in dark water. And use Brighter colors, the darker the water the more the fish feed by sound rather than sight, but once they get in close the brighter colors sometimes help them zero in, and not miss the lure.

j r, what lakes are you fishing up there ??/ I fish the Three lakes chain maybe twice a year, and we use black in line bucktails with gold blades on them !! We've tried different combinations, but that seems to work the best and that water in the chain is very dark !!!!

I got a couple 6500's myself and love them. I dont know much about the rod though. I would try some bigger lures that would produce lots of vibration. Maybe try a grandma lure.
