Momofilament normally needs changed once a year I still think Triline is the best.
I disagree with that one Chuck. I probably fish more times a year both ice and open water than almost anyone other than a working bass pro. Thousands of casts in the sun causes any mono line to break down. I change out my ice rods about every 2 weeks in the winter and change out the summer rods about once a month. I can tell how healthy the line is by looking at it first and see if it has taken a dull look. Then I run my hands down the line and you can feel the abrasion and lack of smoothness. One thing I have done, however, is to only change out enough line to deal with the longest casts plus about 25 yards extra to deal with retying and an occasional break off (rare). I wind the beginning of the spool with cheap mono line that I buy in bulk and wind until I see about 1/4 inches left to the lip. Then I use premium line joined with a blood knot to go to about 1/8 inch of the spool lip. If I damage some line or need to re-spool I only have to use about 1/6 of what I ordinarily did in the past. That way I can keep fresh line on my rods without breaking the bank. All that premium line on the spool is a waste since to work efficiently line needs to be close to the end of the spool and if someone puts 150 yards of line on a spool only the last 40- 50 yards are actually working line. The rest turns bad and is never actually used. I too like Trilene and my best find so far has been the Trilene vanish transition red/ clear for my ice rods. The sun turns the line on the spool to a Cajun red soit is easy to seebut everything under the water is clear and the fish can't detect it.

Vanish is a good line, and I used it for wuite some time, caught a right many fish on that line, but also broke off the three biggest bass Ive had on with Vanish. It is worth it to me, for that extra strength, Chuck.

I tried the Suffix on my ice rods and what a mess. I opened the bail and in the cold it jumped out and sprang all over the place. It had too much memory for ice fishing but would probably work great with open water longer rods in warm weather. it did seem real tough and abrasion resistant though.

I respool my mono when ever it starts getting the "memory" thing going on more often on the bait casters than the spinners .The super lines almost never .Thats some bad stuff .Don't use it in the rivers around here for big stuff.I get what I call the "Spider Wire Blues" ,Hang it up and you have had a bad day. Mono I usually use Stren clear blue or Ande.

I respool my line every season and a half or two seasons. Most of the time I have to respool because I eventually cut off most of my line due to tangles and snags. If I have a lot of line left, I will usually test it before the season to see how strong it is. If it holds up, I will leave it on, but if it seems like it could be getting rotten, I'll change it. I use Stren line.

Totally agree with that.

I respool alot. Especially in cold weather, we fish the river for walleye and some day's yourguidesfreeze up, it tears your line up. I respool every couple days replacing the last 50 yards.

What was driving me nuts was my Salmon trolling reels. Lake ontario got what people were calling water fleas, they woud get all over your line and you can't reel it through your guides, and the things destroyed your line. Bad days you were respooling every night. 6 to 8 reels X 200-300 yards of line. Cortland line came out with a line that reduced the problem.

This is what the spiny water flea does to your line
