First cast fish question..
Ok why after you catch one fish no other fish bites??
Here is what happened to me this morning.. 6:30 first cast white Rooster..ZING goes the drag..a nearly 3 pounder is boated..30 minutes of casting ..with Roooster , jigs and worm..NOTHING.. 7:00 Next spot..a point off an island 200 yds away..FIRST cast...rubber worm ..wham..nice 2 1/2 pounder...next 30 minutes..NOTHING 7:30..new spot..bumping a green jig with crawdad legs..jingle jingle POP set the hook..boat another 2 pounder..next 30 minutes nothing. 8:00 move to another rock bar..folks on the shoreline are staring at me..FIRST cast..my red shad worm is moving..moving moving WHAM!! Fish boated.Chunky 2 1/2 pounder.. no more hits there either.. Last stop..FIRST cast Shad Rap..tiny bass...no more hits this morning..Gets too hot..10:00 I leave. OK..This place gets nearly zero pressure..My boat is carpeted and I make long cast..notto spook fish..Each place I mentioned should be holding lots of fish..perfect habitat .Plenty of cover, baitfish , and water goes from 1 to 30 feet..so fish can easily find a comfortable depth. When you reel them in do they communicate with the other fish that there is danger around? PS Lures tried, Expensive Rattle trap.."Ireland" Bass n Shad deep diver Zara Puppy Red Shad Gambler { - : worked 1/4 ounce green jig {-: worked 3/8 ounce Rooster Tail..{-: worked Shad Rap Pearl {-: worked Rapala diving jointed minnow.. BEST LURE TODAY Red Shad Gambler..BB split shot..Texas rig |
RE: First cast fish question..
its a fact every fishermen needs to know. when you catch a fish on your first catch its bad luck. everytime i catch a fish on the first cast i know the fishing wont be very good no matter how hard i try. ill be lucky to catch another one.

RE: First cast fish question..
Chuck its just like catching spawning fish when you pull one out
all the others see that there buddy just got yanked out as I know as that happened to me last week fishing and it would take about 25 minutes before the other fish would even look at it again! Mike |
RE: First cast fish question..
I think you got a good point there..Last month in a crystal clear lake I hooked a bass...as I was bringing it in a 2nd bass was swimming right beside the bass,,It was bigger,,As I pulled the bass out of the water the 2nd bass fled into deeper water..

RE: First cast fish question..
I have found lately that i am having a string of catches mostly panfish and crappies a bass now and then then after about 4 fish it will be at least half an hour before I catch another.

RE: First cast fish question..
The only situation where this has not been consistant was when my son and I used live bait..then we stayed in one spot and caught30 bass this year

RE: First cast fish question..

RE: First cast fish question..
Though most of us believe childers is on to something there is a simple truth behind why we tend to catch a fish on the first cast and then nothing else. Remember that the first fish you catch out of an area is usually the most aggressive. This means it will most likely hit about any lure you put in front of it. If the area looks like it should hold multiple fish then the most likely explanation is you aren't using the right lure. I find that when I get in a situation like that a change in lures can be the ticket to more and bigger fish since the big boys are very seldom the most aggressive.

RE: First cast fish question..
Very good hypothesis Indy...makes sense to me..I do generally anchor and try other lures..and sometimes that does work..
|
RE: First cast fish question..
its just how nature works.
|
RE: First cast fish question..
The only flaw in this thought...
Get yourself a couple dozen shiners..;)You don't need to move the boat..You can stay at one spot and use all 24 up and catch serious fish..BUT if your using a lure..the size and quanity change dramatically. |
RE: First cast fish question..
it's just a matter of the bigger bass being smarter than the younger bass the younger also tend to be more agressive and therefore when a big bass sees his budy get pulled out of the water that discourages him just a little bit=wouldn't it you??
|
RE: First cast fish question..
Just a thought, you said you make LONG cast. have you tried backing off your spots an extra 50 - 75 feet, making shorter cast, and gradually working your way into the area your fishing? Generally the most aggressive fish are the shallowest, and when you are bringing in that one, your bring it, its thrashing, urinating, etc, right over the less aggressive, but still highly catchable other fish, likely spooking them in the process.

RE: First cast fish question..
I read somewhere years ago that if you release the fish where you caught him that they release chemicals which alerts the other fish to danger...The article advised fishermen to put the fish in the live well if legal and release when you were moving to a new spot...
Now, since you moved to different spots, I have 2 other theories...Once you move from where fish were, how do you know that you moved to where fish are?? Also, it seems that often when I catch a couple of fish early, I speed up my retrieve in my rush to put more fish in the boat, sometimes this works against you... Finally, you could have just started fishing at the "end of the bite"... One thing you might want to try...After catching a few in a spot, change lures...Then move to another spot or two and come back later and try the same spot again... When I fished out of a 14 foot jon boat in the 70s, I didn't run all over the lake because I only had a 9.9 motor...I believe I caught more fish back then because I thoroughly fished a spot with several different lures before I moved...I then hit the same spots again on the way back to the landing... |

I read somewhere years ago that if you release the fish where you caught him that they release chemicals which alerts the other fish to danger...The article advised fishermen to put the fish in the live well if legal and release when you were moving to a new spot... Diffently worth a try...Also I appreciate Josh 's responce..He fishes pro and I appreciate his thoughts as well.
Now, since you moved to different spots, I have 2 other theories...Once you move from where fish were, how do you know that you moved to where fish are?? I know this area like the back of my hand..:) Also, it seems that often when I catch a couple of fish early, I speed up my retrieve in my rush to put more fish in the boat, sometimes this works against you... Finally, you could have just started fishing at the "end of the bite"... Don't think so partner..they were still busting the chops of the gizzard shad..It was 5:45 AM..great time for hawgs..;) One thing you might want to try...After catching a few in a spot, change lures...Then move to another spot or two and come back later and try the same spot again... I've got 6 rods at all times...that have worked for years.. 1. Rubber worm ..texas rig or pegged 18 " 2. Rooster Tail for suspended fish or reaction bites. 3/8 ounce white..my money maker..;) 3. Top water..very effective in the morning..my4 top favorites A, Rapala Floaters,,,B. heddon Torpedo C Zara Spook D.Devil's Horse 4. Crankbait..Shad rap for 5-10 feet..lipless for deepwater 5. Minus one crank for shallow weedy flats or weedless spinner bait. 6. Jig...immitates crawfish..lets me learn the bottom structire...plus MTHands swears by them..so I use them. When I fished out of a 14 foot jon boat in the 70s, I didn't run all over the lake because I only had a 9.9 motor...I believe I caught more fish back then because I thoroughly fished a spot with several different lures before I moved...I then hit the same spots again on the way back to the landing... Now this is true..I probably don;t fish at a good spot as long as I should..My son fishes with Jay..who is a semi pro..he said "Gee Dad..Jay spends alot longer at one spot than you do..especialyy when he knows there are fish there."..and Jay catches lots opf big fish..This is probably my problem..cause I know the fish are there. Deer hunting is the same way..have I told you guys yet that I'm labeled ADHD..:D NOTE***NOW this morning I pulled 3 off the shoreline close togeter..I was flipping..I was hot and figured me and the fish needed some shade..I figured righy..They were on the east side of the pit..out of the sun. |
