Lunker Bow River Rainbow

Me and riffer hit the bow today(while i was a lil hungover haha) really slow day, and by slow i mean one fish. But that one fish sure made up for the lack of fish. My new personal best rainbow. 24". Only pic i got cause just after that pic it flipped into the net, i grabbed it again flipped again back into the net, 3rd time was a charm and she got away so at least i got one pic. Got her on the SJW.

Nice rainbow, Congrats!! Now if I can get a brookie that big..[&:]I will keep trying as my biggest to date is 19 1/2 inches.. But, I know where there is a few big ones lurking still..

Thanks guys i was pumped when i got her netted, gave an amazing fight, even better since it was on my fly rod, my 5 weight was a lil undergunned for her, couldnt move her at some points.

Phil thats still a nice big brookie, my biggest so far is 16", but im headin to a lake this year where its not uncommon to hook into 20+" so im pretty excited for that, but im gunna wait till spawn cause i honestly dont think there is a more beautiful trout then the brook in spawning colors.

I think you should change your name to SJW:D:D. Btw, how many different colors of the ol sjw do you have? purple, red, and brown??

Nice hen...beautiful

Congrats again man, now for the SJW fly, is that the San Juan Worm? You have a lot of luck with it it seems, and I would like to try it around here. Do you have an pictures of it?

Thanks!

RE: Lunker Bow River Rainbow

Yep SJW is the San Juan Worm, always have at least one tied on my line.

My favorite colors are copper and red and sometimes orange, sometimes i will mix them so half is copper and other half is red. Other colors dont work NEARLY as good as those so i dont even have them in my fly box.

Here is a pic of the copper one(made out of copper wire you can pick up at any fishing store or anywhere that carrys wire really)

And here is a red one(i use liquid lace)

Here is a guy that gets me alot of fish(with the fly pattern of course) the stonefly

The stonefly gets alot of fish here as well, the hairsear works great here to. Catch a nice fat landlock on them is a blast but you need to be carefull with such a small hook..;) Most of my trout I get from brooks and rivers and getting brookies early they still have a nice color to them. The biggest I had caught came from a good size stream all native. He had a white star on top of his back fin, a real nice brookie caught in early April. Right now though we have to much snow to even try and get into those places..[:@]Also in our fly fishing only places no wieght is allowed so I tie my nymphs without the eyes and all that... It is still alot of fun though..:)

TS... Congrats on a fine fish...Almost looks like you are holding the eggs in the old girl with your index finger while she's getting her picture took..

Good looking bugs there...Do you tie your own..??...

I'm gonna have to give the SJW a try on my local brown trout .....

RE: Lunker Bow River Rainbow

No i dont tie my own yet, i do tie my own SJW though since they are soo easy to make.

I would suggest giving the SJW a try i know it works womders for me.

What size do you do the best on..??..

I'm ordering some Prince nymphs and some olive hare's ears and I thought I'd order up a few SJW's to try...

RE: Lunker Bow River Rainbow

Well i know im fishing for those lunkers but i still have the smaller 10-15" fish hit my #2 and #4. I like them big then have a few different nymphs trailing it so that bigger heavier wire worm will drag them to bottom and they bounce on bottom therefore putting it right in front of the fishs face and there are three floating past them so its like a lil buffet. So my main sizes are #2 and #4 but if your targeting smaller fish i would go with a #6

RE: Lunker Bow River Rainbow

Most of my nymphs I let the current take them down.. I will try the SJW when I get a chance.. Most of my nymphs are from a # 16 to a # 12.. as I try to keep them small like the ones they are eating..

troutslayer 04-14-2008 08:36 PM

RE: Lunker Bow River Rainbow

yeah most of my other nymphs are #12-#16 but for some reason i have alot better luck with the bigger SJW then the smaller ones.

never tried your variety...mine are tied with almost like a pipe cleaner but without the wire...tied off at hte shank and eye of the hook with a little hanging in front of the eye and past the bend....i like red and brown.

Yah i know of that kind and am not a fan at all hahaha they get beaten up way to fast for me and arent heavy enough for the way i fish them, i will use them on lakes for stocked trout though but when im goin for monster browns, bows, and bulls and it just takes one to shred one of the kind your talkin about so thats why i prefer the all wire, more durable and like the way they fish.

Is that the Bow River in B.C.? If it is I fished it once dureing the koho run.
Nice fish, especially on a fly, I gave up fly fishing and use my spinner now but I do miss and respect the people that know and have time for the art. Good Job.

Nope its the bow river in alberta. I used to spin fish the bow all the time and rarely have any luck, i took up fly fishing and i dont even think about bringing my spin now, that river is hard to fish with spin tackle as compared to fly fishing.
