best line?, i hear people recomend line i wouldn't put on a weed-eater, some lines have unbelieveable stretch in them, others say some lines have too much memory, others say a particular line is too brittle, keep in mind it is possible to get a bad spool of line, i bought a 1200yrd spool once i could break with my hands, the line looked like it had been under a heat lamp for a year or two[:@][:-], lines are like boats everybody is making better lines, i have even heard that some of the bass pro and cabelas brand are decent(although i'm sure they are probably made by stren or berkley or some other big name manufactor) but since you ask here are my favorites...

mono i like berkley big game in green, braid i like power pro, flurocarbon the jury is still out, most of the fluro's i have tried seem brittle,, but i don't fish ultra clear water so fluro has not been that big a deal for me, some are saying it's the stuff for clear water, low light refraction i think is the big plus

From a man who usesa weed eatter alot that is very funny.:D:D
If you have a baitcaster you won't go wrong with Stren Super Braid.
Sold at Walmart for about 13.00 a spool. I fish very heavy cover. No break offs yet and 20 pound test looks like 6 pound test. Cast good. I have not tried this on anything but a bait caster though. I've used it flipping and casting. I've only used it for worming and weedless spinnner baits.

You know what One shot. After hearing you talk about it on line here I took a spool out of the package at Walmart. Side by side it looks like Stren Power Braid. :Dmaybe a little more stiffer ..maybe.

i have tried it not as strong this comes from the tackle shop owner who isnt sponsered by either and he knows his stuff power pro is 9 strand i think stren is 7 more strand braid = stronger

RE: Best Line

OK ..the next time I buy a braid I'll go ahead and get the Power braid. It did feel a little stiffer. Stren Braid is impossible to get out of a knot. In other words sometimes when pitching, your line may wrap around the tip eyelet. LOL You may as well cut your line because you can't unravel a Stren braid knot. That is the only negative I have with the stuff. It can dig into the spool but not bad. I can cast it pretty good. BUT...if you get a knot..save yourself a stress attack. Cut the line and retie.

RE: Best Line

Never used braided line - Do you use your regular knot or is there a specific way you like to tie braided line - I double the line pass through the hook and back over the hook - pull - there is a specific name for the knot but it's late? how does it do with rod guides -

I wonder how many pros use the braided line?

The best mono would be ?

for fluro I use berkley vanish, the verdict is still out for braid either spider or firewire

RE: Best Line

bird i use a palomar knot, sounds like what your tying, on some braids they have a coating, some do not, power pro does itand makes knot tying easier, don't remember right off the others that coat or don't coat, the palomar knot is supposed to retain 80%+ line strenght, and it pretty much my favorite, plus its quick and easy;)

huntnbud, thanks for the heads up on the vanish, i'm kind of partial to berkley but i did not care for the gorilla braid they had[:@], but as far as tough mono, big game is bad news

Maybe I'm the only one who found this.. But I tried powerpro on my texas rig setup, and it was just TOO sensitive. I would feel a bite, set the hook, and come up empty. Switch to mono and I immediately started hooking the fish. However, Its great on a carolina rig in deep water. For everything else, I use Yo Zuri Hybrid.

My brother is heavy into fishing and his line of choice is the Spider Wire...

Chuck7 07-22-2006 01:43 AM

RE: Best Line

I used Spider Wire for a while....until some other braids came out. Then I started comparing them. There is a wide variety of briads out there now to choose from . It's hard to know which one to chose from .That's why I like talking about products on here. we re pretty much non bias here and can give a pretty good review.

The Power Pro line - does it has a outside covering on the braid? - does it function more like mono on the reel - I have had trouble with the braided line wrapping around the tip of the rod - Thanks for your replies!

Good question ...Stren Braid is bad about wrapping around eyelets...but it gets bites and is strong. I didn't go fishing this morning. I decided to make breakfast for my wife and fellowship with her. I get one more week off before i go back to school. One more week to fish .;)My wife had to go back to school early for she is the Network Manager of our school. I'll get some of that Power Pro today and give it a good work out next week. Then I'll give my honest opinion. Looks good when I opened up a package in Wally. My problem is I don't know whether to go with 20 pound or higher.

Sure thing Chuck 7 - give me some input on the Power line - I am curious - I am thinking about going with the 8dia or 10 dia which is rated for 30-40 lbs! What about color - white - is that white or flourescent clear like mono?

I swear by Spiderwire Fusion. Great all around line for the price. Problem is, they seem to have stopped making the stuff :(.

OK Birddog here is my finding. I've used the following4 briads and here is what I've discovered.. 1 being horrible and 10 being awesome

Fireline SpiderStren Super BraidPower Power pro

castability 56 7 9
not breaking 10889
Bleaching out fast66 7 5
Knotting up around tip9 5 38
Tying hooks onfast9 4 4 8
Flipping accuracy9 7 6 9
Skinny line 3 8 79
Fire line looks good but black stuff gets over ever thing.Too darn thick and wirey for me. My over all choice is Powerpro. IMHO;)

chuck you got double power pro lol

RE: Best Line

Yeah..I know. When I tried to edit it ...the dialog was so wide it wouldn't come up for me to delete. Sorry about that.

Here are some of my favorite things about Power pro

cast decent
doesn't knot up as bad as others
WARNING backlashes can be a nightmare..set your drag good
confidence..big ones should not break it
ease in knot tying {Line is a little stiff}
As Josh has mentioned..EXTRA SENSITIVE bump worms slower than normal. Fo rme that's good. I lost the first 12 hits but got used to it real easy. A bite feels like a piece of grass...not a pebble

I've never tried it on a spinning reel and probably wouldn't . I only fish braids on baitcasters. You will like it. It's a step above the rest of the braids.

i use fluro- P-line and berkly vanish are the best for bass... when it comes to musky I use power-pro and would use it for bass too if i was fishing really heavy cover.

Well, I did a Science Fair project way back in grade 7 or 8 (I'm in 11 now :D) and I found Berkley Trilene XT to be the best mono (compared to Red Fox, Trilene XL, and just for S&G's, Fireline). Now theXT was tops in abrasion reistance, and something else, the only thing Fire had it beat in is strength. I had8 pound XT hold a 20 pound weight. So, when I use my ultralight, I use XL (it's cheaper at my store [&:]by a few bucks actually) and have been using a variety oflines on my baitcaster, and have really liked Gorillia braid, but formono, Big Game was nice too. I have used Ironsilk, and I found for the first year it was real nice, but it seems to have rotted over the winter [:-](My dad lost a 7ish looking pound Laker due to the rot). I've rambled enough for now though........;)

I like Suffix Tritanium for mono, PowerPro for braid, and Seaguar for Fluoro. I fish mostly saltwater, so I haven't been using any fluoro lately. Pretty much the only time I use that is when steelhead fishing in NY, and the fluoro is only the last section of my tippet when flyfishing. Powerpro works pretty well...all I've got it loaded on is spinners, and I've settled on using 20lb for everything from big to small. It's a small diameter so it casts quite well, and the 20lb is enough to land anything if you use your drag correctly (and when expecting larger fish or casting over 2oz I use a 40lb mono shock leader). My biggest complaint is that the first 10 feet or so of it take a beating from casting. The dye/coating comes out of it and it becomes a lot more limp (and more prone to wrapping a guide). The knots snug up a little tighter when it's been worn some, but it's more difficult to tie with than when it's new and stiffer. I've heard really good things about the new Suffix braid that came out fairly recently too. From the reports I've seen, it's a toss-up between that and PowerPro. My conventional reels all have Suffix Tritanium on them, which works out pretty well as a compromise between castability and durability. The mono is a lot more abrasion resistant than braid, and MUCH easier to pick out of a bird's nest when my brain forgets the important step of stopping the reel when the weight touches down.

I've got ironsilk on one of my rods. It is tough, and if you tangle it up in a birds nest it's a little easier to pull out due the stiffness and being slick. However, at least on a conventional reel, I've found that it's fairly stiff and distance is somewhat reduced as it doesn't go through the first guide as well as other lines. On a spinning rod where the first guide is larger that might not be as much of an issue, but once I strip the ironsilk off that reel I won't be putting more on.

Let me give a So. Cal Secret. P-Line X-strong. The stuff is crazy strrong. I have used 4# to flip in the tulies with no problem. I have also caught good tuna on 12#. It is a bit more expensive but well worth it.

Same here , didnt like it at all. Have it on a spinning reel and for some reason it has a mind of its own. Have fireline on two reels and love it. They also just came out with a clear version so the black stuff isnt an issue. I have the red cajun line on my baitcaster.
