Hi,

I just caught this fish up here in Quebec, Canada. Any idea what it is?

Those are not native fish up there are they?? I thought there were from South America or something (but may be wrong). Thereis abusiness near here that sells day fishing tickets on a couple of ponds they own and there are some of those stocked. Alligator gar is what I've heard them called.

Looks like a chicken leg may work as bait

Actually, if truth be told, my brother caught this in South Carolina. I have no idea if it was from a stocked pond or not. Funky looking fish regardless.

Cheers,

It's not a regular gar, it's a long-nosed gar. They are in a lot of lakes throughout the midwest and Canada...just very few of them.

Thanks Pat,
I'm a real stickler on the correct name of a species being thatI teach Science. Let's not forget folks. Long nosed gar.

We mostly have the Florida Gar here in FLorida which get mostly around 2 feet long.

Here is an 8 foot Alligator Gar

Here is a list of all of our freshwater fish and records. It appears we have all 3 types of gar down here.
