what i do is take a whole bluegill or half of a really big one, put a hook through the back and let it sit on the bottom. but i don't know if that would work well if time were an issue.

If you're fishing from the bank, try baiting a spot.
Use grain (maize/milo works good) soaked in a bucket
of water aweek or so, or put out a bale of alfalfa hay
afew days prior. If it's a large body of water and you have a boat, look for flooded trees where the big birds have been roosting. You'll see the white droppings on the limbs. If you can find these areas, especially when close to deep water/channel,
the catfish often come in and feed on the undigested fish from
the birds. Some kind of aromatic bait is good. OK let's just say
it, the stinkier the better. Liver that's sat out awhile. Cut bait
that makes you spit out your snuff. Some if the commercial
stuff is good, just remember if you don't cringe when
baiting your hook, the fish may not be able to find it. Use atreble
hook tied on 4 to5 inches above a sinker large enough to take
it to the bottom quick.

if u use a blue gill get a small one and hook it in the back so it can swim/jitter around without goin to far. or use a big or normal sized bluegill if u knows there big cats in there. goldfish work really really good. along wiht creek chubs. and dont rule out worms

Catfish are bottom feeders get rid of the float! If you are fishing in a River find slow pools that are deep rig through an egg sinker so that when he hits you can give him line. Most catfish of any size are going to hit cut bait Flatheads prefer live fish 6" to 10". Also try fishing at night especially for Flatheads.

i put a 2 once weight on my line. then my swivel. then a hook. can use a leader if wanted. Get a map and find the deepest spot or just experitment with spots. i buy large catfish hooks. then bait it with a big night crawler. YOu can spry it with wd40, preperathion h, catfish spray from bait mait. garlic and salt. or something else thats nasty. or you could just buycatfish bait.
