OUalum95 Welcome to the board.I'm glad you have no bad feeling towards those who don't like the Rem 710.These boards are made up of people's opinions.Agree or not we are all intitled to them.Sounds like you are more then satisfied with your 710 which I'm happy for you.Maybe if I shot one I would change my opinion of them.I'm a Ruger Fanatic and getting to old to change now.Good luck with it and your Elk hunt next season.

A couple of years ago I was in the market for a new 270 and didnt want to spend big bucks, I looked at both the Savage and Remington Package guns. I really wanted the Remington since I own 4 others and feel that they are a reliable, trustwothy gun, but I didnt have a 270. I wanted synthetic, but really didnt care for the gray color of the Rem. I also was VERY disappointed with the action which seemed very sloppy to me and I certainly am no expert. When I put the Savage to my shoulder it just seemed much more natural to me. It fit like a glove and to me that's more impotrtant than 1/4 in. groups in a hunting situation. The Savage came with a cheap 32 mm scope that I put on an old 22 and replaceed it with a Nikon Monarch.
Besides feeling like the gun was made for me I was REALLY surprised with its extreme out of the box accuracy and light weight.
This "ugly" gun seemes to always get out on a few hunts each year just because I like it.
Try them all, when its the right one you will know it. In my opinion, for the money, you cant go wrong with Savage.

Well,I guess that the majority of these 710's are accurate enough.However,they don't seem to be built to last.Even if you consider that they would be used by the "half box of ammo a year" crowd.Sort of like a Bic lighter of the gun world.BTW,is it true that Playskool designed the god-awful stock on the 710?Regards.

Well if you read the posts in this thread you will see most of the thoughts on the Rem 710 are bad. It should be avoided like the plauge. As far as the Weatherby Vanguard, you would probably be better off with a Savage. If all else fails shop around for a good used Ruger.

Well, if your talking about the walmart weatherby, it isn' t really a weatherby. It' s made by Howa. But it has the weatherby guarentees as a weatherby so it' s a pretty good deal. Howa rifles are very good rifles with a nice action. So I would go with that. I wouldn' t get a 710.

NEF makes a fair rifle for around 200 bucks. Savage is a good rifle. Also there is the winchester black shadow if you want something with a synthetic stock, it' s under 400 dollars. Marlin makes a great rifle although the choice of calibers is a little limited.

I bought a 710 in 270 last year. It may be uglier than the north end of a south bound mule, but I love it! It' s light, shoots good, and I don' t care if it gets beat up in the boonies. The first day out with it, I put several rounds through it and a ruger using Remington Express 150gr coreloks. The Ruger kicked harder, even though it was heavier. I' m perfectly happy with my 710.
