In the interest of ensuring that the information this new shooter recieves is accurate, I would like to point out that there is no such thing as a 410 gauge shotgun. It is accurately called a .410 caliber bore, as the ".410" refers to the bore diameter (caliber), NOT the gauge. The term "gauge" in reference to shotguns refers to the number of solid lead balls of that bore diameter required to equal one pound. For example, a 12 gauge shotgun is such because 12 lead roundballs of bore diameter equal one pound, 20 balls for a 20 gauge, 28 balls for a 28 gauge, etc.... The bore diameter (caliber) of a 12 gauge is roughly .72 cal.

Agree the 280 will kill the deer as far as anybody should shoot, and if I had to have only one gun it would be in 280.

i think you said this is your first rifle if that is true in my opinion your limit should be no farther than 250 yds. i have been hunting and shooting for 20 years and i dont like to take shots over 300 yards. if you plan to shoot at longer ranges please practice shooting at those ranges before you ever go hunting. now with all of that said my choice hands down is 7mm rem. mag. hope this helps.

I like the 7mm mag for long distance shots on deer. Preferably the 175 gr. bullets.

It works great on deer and just about anything you want to hunt with it.

That's the jist of what most of these people are saying. If you aren't familiar with your rifle, 100 yrds might be to far.

it also depends on the area that you're in. Out west in say eastern montana or the wyoming sage flats 300 might not be a "long shot".
back east in the hills of appalacia or in midwestern heavy timber, you might not ever take a shot longer than 150 yds.

shoot out to what you think will be the farthest you will ever possibly shoot, and then shoot much farther.

I'm not talking about a box of shells and an afternoon at the range. Lots of rounds. Lots of different days and weather types.

calibers are similar to the draw weight on a bow. The bigger you go 60lb -> 80 lb the more power. The larger caliber the more power. Just a rule of thumb. There are so many different sizes within a given caliber (bullet diameter) so don't assume that a 30-30 has the "power" that a 30-378 weatherby has.

These guns will take deer out farther than 80% of the ppl on this boad can efectivly shoot.

1ST you should learn deer befor you try to learn to shoot 500 yards.If you know about the animal you hunt you will most likely never need to shot that far.

What you should try to do is kill deer as close as you can not as far as you can.

What hunter is a better hunter? 1 a guy that kills a deer at 20 yards with a 30 06 2 a guy that shoots a deer at 600 yards with a 300 UM. I would put my $ on the 1st guy.

Think about what you are going to do with the gun. ANY gun in the 30 cal will work good and allso can be reloaded in most any size bulet.
