RE: Which brand for a new gun

I bought a Howa at Wal-Mart and am very happy with it.

RE: Which brand for a new gun

I've got rifles made by Remington, Winchester, CZ, and just got rid of a Ruger M77 MkII. All but my Ruger are/were very accurate. I loved the Ruger but I just couldn't get it to group consistently so I traded it away; probably just got a bad one because most Ruger owners seem not to have had the accuracy problems I had. I've heard nothing but good about Savage, and may get one someday.

Any one of these rifle makes would probably satisfy you. CZ doesn't make one in 7mm-08 unfortunately, but the American makers all do. Go touch and feel, see which one fits you best, and go for it.

Thanks everyone for all of the input. I went and looked at a Savage, and really liked the way it felt. I think I am leaning in that direction. But you never know. I have been real interested in the tikka, but I can't find anyone around me that sells them. I will have to do some more looking.

RE: Which brand for a new gun

Tikka is on national backorder, or at least I have been told that by 6 different shops in my area.
I was between the Weatherby Vanguard Stainless (made by Howa) and the Tikka T3 Lite Stainless. After holding each and feeling the action, seeing how smooth the bolt operated, the Tikka has far superior quality. It's serviced by Beretta USA if anything were to go wrong, but being that it's made by Sako the likelihood of that seems to be very slim. There was a thread on here a while ago stating that their barrels had a recall, but I was not able to confirm that. Mind you though, the Tikka will set you back a bit more, probably around $100 more from what I have seen. The only thing that worries me is that I'm between a .270 and a 7mm Rem Mag. and the Tikka's are very light, and I don't know how well suited it would be to use with a high recoil caliber like the 7mm Mag. Hope this helps.

I like the tikkas also, but they have recall some of their stainless guns (sako's also). Nothing posted on their site, but several threads on this and other forums. I just learned of it this evening. I tried to buy one for my wife this fall, couldn't find one anywhere. I assumed it was because they were a steal, I now think it was because they've been blowing up! Several reports of injuries, here and abroad (sweden, australia). Some are saying that they got a bad batch of steel, but nothing on berreta or sako's website. They are a smooth action and supposed to be guarenteed, but I don't know?...
