I was wondering if the savage packages..especially model 16FXP3 is worth picking up for 600 some odd bucks, or if its better to pick up all the components separately and upgrade a few things. I'd use it primarily as a coyote gun or a back up deer rifle when the weather gets bad any input or thoughts would be awsome..

The Savage package guns are great shooters. Thier butt-ugly, but I'll bet soon you will be hanging up your first choice, and using your "back-up deer rifle" more and more.

i bought the 10 gxp package in 7mm-08.. great package. Shoots well in fact it gets more range time than my M70. I think they are worth it. I don't find them that ugly either. I would say they are average looking. Nothing flashy just a decent gun at a decent price.

I've got an old J-model (22-250) with a stainless, fluted heavy barrel and a Canjar trigger. You'd EXPECT a gun like that to be accurate, and it is. My brother has an off-the shelf package Savage 270 with a Simmons 3X9. I swear by all that is Holy, I watched him make a head shot on a prairie dog at 310 paces using an off-the-shelf Winchester 160-gr soft point. One shot. We're both six foot tall, so I know that's around 300 yards. Sure, he's a helluva shot, but that weapon is incredible. Since we found the right recipe for loading 90-gr- hollowpoints, he's become a varmint assassin.
