What is best 30-06 ammo for Elk

Going Elk hunting next year, shoot a 30.06, thinking about using Federal Preium 180 grain Nozler partion ammo. What do you folks think, is that a good selection?

Hi Oldguy,

As long as that load shoots well in your rifle.....it'd be hard to beat!

You bet. And I have an Idea they will shoot good in your gun. They have been very accurate in everything I have tried them in.

If it shoots well out of your rifle try the Federal Premium HE 180 gr. Nosler partition load. You turn your 06 into a 300 H&H Mag. By this I mean the HE loading is rated at 2880 fps the same as the 180 gr. loading of the 300 H&H.

superpig (great name btw) are the HE rounds safe to use in all 30.06 rifles?

for instance you can only shoot 45 colt plus p loads in certain handguns, ie ruger blackhawks, tc's and a few others.

Any rifle that is originally chambered for the 30-06 will handle the HE loads. Certain military conversions (receivers) are not designed to handle the pressures that any 30-06 cartridge generates. Federal is able to generate higher velocites with out increasing chamber pressures beyond SAAMI specs with their HE loads. If I remember corectly it is from a dual powder base or something like that.

The exception being semi auto rifles. Do not use the HE loads in autos.

The 180 grain Nosler partition would be about as good a choice as you could get provided they are accurate out of your rifle. If not try the TBBC, A-frame, failsafe, partition gold, Barnes-X.

Oldguy------I've used the 30/06 for over 25 years on elk here in Colorado. I've used Win, Rem, & Hornady---180 grain bullets---they all worked. I know you heard it before but it's true. Shot placement is the key. Your choice of 180 grain Nosler partitions in Federal Premium is an excellent choice. Good luck.

kyhillbilly, I agree putting the shot where it has to be is key...however with elk Bullet Construction is a huge key. IMO these are one of the toughest animals to topple and wouldn't leave anything to chance by using a marginal bullet or caliber for that matter.

Oldguy with the 3006 you have a good deal of selection and range for bullets acceptable for an elk hunt (nosler parts, win. failsafe, speers grandslam, trophy bonded, swift aframes, barnes x, etc). Start out with the 180's and see how they shoot, my best advice is go with the best bullet for the job that includes the one that gives you both solid construction and accuracy.
