270 reduced recoil shells?
 

I hope I get here. My father is 71 an is still shooting his 300 win mag. I have never seen him miss or miss hit a deer. 2 years ago he missed and this yr he gut shot one and wounded one we never found. He is flinching due to the gun, I saw it on the range 2 yrs ago. I have a 270 but am wondering if these reduced recoil shells are good. I am also thinking of buying a 7mm-08 or similar caliber, thoughts? The more guns the better, right? We hunt northern MN whitetail under 200yrd shots. Thanks

a 270 with a full power 130 gr has no where near the recoil of a 300 winny, I use to use the rem. 100 gr factory loads for deer with good success not sure how it would do on mn deer.

6.5 is hard to beat if you're only looking for a low recoil whitetail round. The 7mm-08 is pretty friendly too but it can have a bit of a "sharp" recoil in short barreled youth sized rifles. I have one my wife and little one shoot and that small one hits the shoulder like a 30-06 vs my 22" barrel full size stocked 7-08's.

Darn near anything will be less than that 300 mag though of course.lol Good for your dad though still shouldering that sucker!

All of the lite ammo works well on deer. I downloaded a 30-06 for my daughter for recoil reduction. If looking for a diff. caliber 243, 260, 6.5 credmoor, 7-08 or even the good old 30-30 kill deer with out much recoil.

Instead of buying another rifle, not that there is anything bad about that, maybe you should look into a mechanical recoil decelerator. Limbsaver pads are great but from what you are describing it just wouldn't be enough. If you reloaded, you could always load the .300wm down quite a bit, safely to .30-06 levels or a bit lower, but if you are looking to reduce even .270 then that wouldn't work either. Gracoil mech. reducers work well and if you have some basic wood working skills they aren't hard to install yourself. If your dad has been using that particular rifle for a lot of years, he would more than likely rather find a way to continue with it so finding a way to reduce recoil and curing his flinch would make him the happiest.

When my wife first hunted with me, I bought two boxes of Federal Fusion 145 grain reduced recoil. After a few practice sessions I decided she didn't need them and went to just standard loads. I still have a full box left I'll save for the kids here in a few years.

There was noticeably less recoil. They shot great out of my rifle, although I only shot them to 150 yards. I never shot a deer with them so I have no idea of on game performance. Maybe one of these years I'll shoot a doe with them just to see.

I think if he just went to standard loads that he'd be fine though. A .270 has WAY less recoil than what he is used to.

try reduced power loads....
and/or 130grain loads should kick less than 150gr loads.

or yes buy him a .243win... or 7mm-08 w/120gr bullets.

or 6.5 creedmoor...

learn to reload, lots of light bullets for the 270, don't make much recoil, you have not listed where you live, but I hunted our smaller whitetails here in wv for years using a hornady 110 gr hp, there is now a nosler 110 gr accubond available which would be fine for any whitetail/muley that walks, if your not hunting the northern giants rem. and win. both use to load a 110 gr soft point which I have used to take many deer with.

The published charts are odd, but it looks like the reduced recoil choice would turn your father's 300 Win Mag into a 308 Win. A mild load in a 308 Win will cleanly take any deer.

If the published velocity is anywhere near correct then the reduced recoil choice would produce a fine deer rifle without changing anything but the ammunition for your father. I imagine it would be a hard pill to swallow if someone told a fellow that he was getting too old for his trusted rifle.
