I' ve never owned a Winchester but i own both Savage and Remington and like them both. If i could only choose one it would be Remington. As for the top feed or floorplate i' ve also had both and i' ve never had a problem with unloading the top fed so i don' t have a preference with either.

I have decided on the Savage Model 11G in .308

Wood stock, blued metal, cut checkering. $367.34 at the local Wal-Mart.

I just checked the zero on my Savage .243 (Model 110) 100yards/Factory ammo(Winchester CPX100grain bullets)

1" and 1/8" group.

Love it.

Mainehunt,

If you have a 243 why are you purchasing a 308? Unless you have a larger cal gun like 30-06, 300, 7mm, why buy a mid cart gun?

JMO-
if you start with a 243, I would jump to a 7mm or 300win. I shoot a 7mm with 139gr hornady SPs and it doesn' t kick much more than a my bros 308 but I can bump it up to 175gr for elk and knock em down at 300yards.

Just wondering.

[quoThe .303 lee enfields are known as crowbars or doorprops. Many belive both are more suited for these uses than as hunting guns.te]

Whoever said that obviously doesnt know much in my opinion. One of the finest bolt action battle rifles ever made (the experts opinion not mine). I' m guessing it could withstand a little deer hunting. I took a nice buck last weekend with my 1942 No4 MK 1.

Well, llike I said, I bought the Savage model 11 in .308, wood stock, blued.
I put a scope on it, one that I already had. 2.5-10x44mm, wideview.

I took 5 shots to zero it, the sixth shot killed a doe at 140 yards. I used the Winchester CXP2, 150 grain power-points. Deer was broadside, the bullet hit right behind shoulder, halfway between belly and back. Complete pass through, broke one rib on nearside, two ribs on farside. Took out both lungs and top of heart was shredded. I thought that the hit was too high to hit the heart, but I believe that a splinter of the rib is what hit the heart.

Either way, I' m very happy with my decision to buy the Savage. The trigger pull is actually pretty good, haven' t measured yet, but I' m happy with it for a hunting rifle. Looking forward to shooting some groups of of the bench. I think the 243 is now my son' s new rifle.
