Ruger makes good rifles and handguns for the money, but your question really lacks a lot as to what you want it for, what caliber, where will you use it, etc. for us to be able to help you much.

Ruger's are overbuilt !!!

For that reason, as a rule, they are a little heavy for me.

However, like Browning; "they don't wear out, they wear in".

I own M77s in 30-06 and .17HMR. I like both of them and plan on getting another M77 in .223.

I have a few M77 rifles chambering cartridges from .22 Hornet up to .375 Ruger. Ruger makes a very dependable hunting rifle that is well worth the price. I like the Hawkeye stock better than any of the other M77 models and the Hawkeye trigger seems to be a bit better than the Mark II to me. If I wanted a target rifle then Ruger would probably not be my choice but for a hunting rifle you can not go wrong picking a Hawkeye.

It's a good, accurate rifle. I personally don't like the fit of the stock (to me). In 30-06, I have a Rem. 700, Winchester Model 70 (Pre-64) and a Browning A-Bolt that just feel better to me.

That says it very well.

I tend to think that there's a moot distinction made about Ruger M77 Hawkeye rifles. You can't buy a Ruger M77 action, so nobody is building custom benchrest rifles on them, so then they get further reputed as inaccurate. There were eras where the Ruger barrels weren't up to snuff, but then there came an era where Ruger produced hammer forged barrels for several other makers too. Small port Rem 700 shooters criticize the gaping hole in the top of Ruger actions, but the weight, metallurgy, and forging of the Ruger makes it quite rigid, despite the low encapsulation ratio.

There is a small, yet distinct disadvantage in the Ruger action, and that's weight. A Ruger M77 action is about half a pound heavier than the same length Remington 700. Alternatively, if you can tolerate the extra weight, it does add a little more central balance for a heavy barreled rifle, which can be nice.

The integrated Ruger ring mounts are very solid, proven to be one of the more rigid and durable platforms on the market.

I love Ruger M77 actions. Replace the trigger, bed the action, and be merry.

I have a hawkeye in 35 Whelen. It is a solid rifle and accurate. I usually prefer the rem 700 but after owning this one it has opened my eyes to other Rugers. The action is smooth and strong and I really like the 3 position safety never had one before good luck on your choice
