30-06 Question
I haven't hunted in many years, but am now getting back into it. I live in North Florida and want to start off with deer and pigs. I had it in my head to get a shotgun, but after much research, I am leaning towards the MArlin XS&. My question is, is a 30-06 to much gun for pigs? Do to budgeting, I want to start off with a gun that will take both, and then get a shotgun as I ease into Turkey hunting. Any thoughts? Any help is much appreciated.

Duh--
That was a Marlin XS7.

30-06 would be just about perfect, a 270, 280, 308, 7mm08 would work quite well also.

30-06
The 30-06 is a great choice. Probably the best part about shooting the 30-06 is that you can buy inexpensive ammo from Wally World. Even though it is inexpensive ammo since you have the power of a 30-06 the cheap ammo will serve you well in a hunting situation, and hopefully you can practice a little more with cheaper ammo. Tom.

30-06 will do anything for ya. I'd say your set
|
Agree's and for hogs you can get heavier loads all the way up to 220gr bullets. That should do well for hogs and close range.

Pick the right bullet and you have a gun that will take anything from groundhogs to Elk.

.30-06 is a great rifle for the one gun guy !!!
Or atleast your first............... LOL Just wait......................you'll know what I mean (never enough). |
Personally, I'm a fan of the .308Win, but the 30-06 has to be the most versatile gun out there. There's a boat-load of ammo made for this chambering, in a smathering of bullet weights, so you will very easily find ammo that suits your needs. Plus, if/when you plan on hunting somewhere other than North Florida, the -06 will gladly tag along as your hunting buddy. There's nothing in North America that will survive a well placed shot from an -06 with a proper bullet choice.

you can get many different grain bullets for the odd 6. i have a savage 111 and love it. I use a limbsaver pad and it easly reduces recoil by 70%. very veritile gun!

30-06 is an excellent choice. You can pick up some really cheap ammo for practice and planking, then get some really good ammo (TSX, GMX, or E-Tip) for hunting. Yah, I'm a lead-free freak.

30/06
I too live in NE Florida and I use a Remington 7600 to shoot hogs with. So far I've taken 4 hogs with it and it's worked very well on all of them. I've used 150 and 165 gr bullets. And ditto on ammo availability. But if budget were an issue and all I could afford is a 30/30 I'd used that too , well actually I do. Folks can say what they want but I have 7 big Maine deer that will attest to the effectivness of a 30/30.
