RE: .260 rem. 700 mountain rifle

ORIGINAL: Ron Duval

The Remington web site does not list the .260 as a option. .270, 7-08, .280, and .30-06 seem to be the current choices. If I could pick one of these, it would be a .280.
I'm not sure where you are at( located on this great planet), but if you don't reload of the 4 calibers mentioned above by Duval, you will have a much better factory loading selection per differnet game with the 270 Win in my opinion? But if you reload then I still suggest the 7mm-08 over them all. JMO

I am located in Arkansas. I don't reload. Midway USA seems to be able to supply all the ammo I need. And Mr. Duval,Remington discontinued the .260 in the mountain rifle, but there are still several used ones to be had. I keep hearing about the 7mm-08's superiority, but in the.260 with the 120 grain bullet I don't see it. Granted, in the 140 grain, the 7mm-08 wins. But at that point I put a 150 grain in one of my .06's.

You need to goto 165gr .308 bullets to get the same Sectional Denesity as the 140/.284. (to beapples to apples;))

I agree that if you shoot factory others may ba better choice but if ammo supply is good then go for it, nothing wrong witha 6.5 based cartridge.

I should think the .280 Remington in that 700 mtn. is a darn good pill.
If you want total flexability, go for the 30-06 in the 700mtn. Using Hornady light Magnum 165gr 30-06... it'll hit harder than a 7mmRemington short mag. 150gr.out of that 22" bbl. with just a tad more trajectory.

I agree ruger77. I have 2 mountain rifles. An '06 Det mag and a 7X57 droptrap door older stylemagazine. I have great accuracy from both. I would love to have one in 260 rem.

I have the mountainLSS in 7-08 ,outfitted it w/ a rifle basix trigger and a 2.5-8 luepy & dual dovetail mounts. LOVE THIS RIFLE! I got a .82" group at the range yesterday w/ a 154gr hornady and 48gr H4350. Was getting around and 1-1.5" groups w/ a 140gr corlockt and 42gr R15, very light recoil even in such a light rifle. Only thing I dont like about the 708 ,is brass is stiil a little expensive compared to the 270.
