First, the remington 788 would be a LOT harder to replace than the savage if you decide later you made mistake or suffer from the dreaded malady-trader's remorse. Secondly, even though the .300 saum would harvest deer to 500 yards, are YOU well capable of it? Also, I really don't see the .300 saum being redily available in 10 years or less time.

I think I am capable of it,I shoot a lot of centerfire every year, or alot to me(500 rounds plus a year and 1000's of rounds rimfire),I killed a doe in 2007 at 368 yards with my daughters remington 700sps in 243 caliber.I have killed several ground hogs off the bags at 350+ so I think I can and I have the place to practice up to 1200yards.I decided to keep my rem.788 and just bought a savage 110 in 300win mag I took everyones advice about the short mags dying and the cost of ammo is less for the win mag.I havent got it set up yet but I am looking at a choates stock for it and a good scope and then I will see what it will do and as soon as the weather gets right and less wind I'll get some practice in,I done have the trigger set down to about a 21oz and it feels good.I shot it to feel the recoil that everyone cries about and it didnt seem bad,I had a sportsman 78 years ago in 30-06 that would hurt you compared to this gun so I dont flinch at recoil.I will use it doing some groundhog patrol this spring and see how far I can stretch it.

That's great news coyote#68, and it sounds like you do know what you're doing, didn't mean it as insult-just standard disclaimer in order to discourage people that are not qualified and just want to blast away at ranges longer than they have any business doing. Looks like you're already got a darn good start on a winner.

Thanks stalkingbear,I didn't take it as an insult.I am not one who just shoots at any animal at any range,I carefully take time to judge the situation and use my nikon range finder several times to make sure it reads the same everytime.I just think that at 350+ I am pushing the ethical range of the calibers due to their rapid loss of energy at those ranges so I decided to step up to the 300win mag and be able to retain enough energy to make an ethical kill with proper shot placement out past 500 yards or so the beanfeilds I hunt in butler county have someplaces that are 1000yards across and stalking across a cut beanfield isn't always an option.The hunting I will be doing is from a benchrest stand with sandbags and from the ground not half rested shots from a treestand.so hopefully this rifle will get sub-moa with a little work and practice from me.thanks.
