While I knew it was 1 of the carolinas,my EXwife is down there (hopefully still) so I don't really pay too much attention about stuff down there now. :D
ORIGINAL: bob roberts the new model 70 is being produced by fnh out of their plant in south carolina. many guns have already been shipped to dealers, mostly featherweights in either 270 win or 30-06. they have ceased shipping recently and will ramp up again immediately after the christmas holidays (or so i was told). for the fellow making the decision, get to a shop that has all three rifles you are interested in. look them over, shoulder each one, get the feel of the gun. then decide which you prefer. they will all kills stuff if you do your part. i either have or have owned all three rifles you asked about. if i were making the decision, i'd get a ruger. |

I fondled a new M70 (in 30/06) the other day. It was VERY nice, clean, well made and the bolt operation was slicker than owl feces. The trigger was also good (not as good as my Sako 75) and the wood was nice. I'd buy one over a Remmy (although they are a little pricey).

I have two in my hand that I picked up today a .308 and a .358 .Not shot them but they are well bult usa rifles. I really like the stocks,They are lively andi the bblisfree floated. Much better than the ones I had in the late 60"s

I bought my second hawkeye yesterday. The bbls are free floated (called Ruger to check) The first shot very good, too cold to try this one. They sure feel lively in your hand.

I just bought a Hawkeye yesterday to :).I went with the SS/blk stock in .280.Got the scope on and gave the barrel a quick cleaning.Havent had a chance to shoot it yet but I've got a box of Rem Express Core-Lokt PSP 150gr and Feds Power Shok SP 150gr when the time comes.

While I was at the shop I looked over a Win Featherweight they had in 30-06.The walnut was nicely figured and stained darker than the older ones I've seen.I hate to say it but it makes my new Hawkeye look like crap.REALLY NICE wood on this one.The bolt was super smooth but it didnt have a positive feel when lifted or locked down.Felt as if it wasnt closeing fully.Kinda spooky!Other than that I liked it alot.

I checked them out on their website and they do like they are worth every penny but you can get two Ruger Hawkeyes in two different calibers for the price of one Winchester! Although, you probably don't have to free float the barrel and get the trigger work done.
As for the Sako, I would take the Winchester over it any day of the week. 1. they are both comparable and 2. the Winnie is made in the good ole' USofA. |
