Favorite Weatherby Cartridge
Ijust read which weatherby rounds are most popular, which are as follows,.30-378, followed by the .300 Wby, .257 Wby. My personal believe is that the .340 Wby is better than both of their .30's. And although the .257 may be awesome to some, I read that it's 18% efficient? Basically I just wanted to note that I love the .340 Wby and think its the best .338 out there. By the way the .340 shoots a 225gr bullet faster than the .300 wby shoots a 200gr!

RE: Favorite Weatherby Cartridge
Weatherby is overrated, never seen a Weatherby cartridge kill any better than a Remington or Winchester. How much experience do you have in this area, anyway? You seem like someone who spends too much time reading ballistics catalogs, instead of hunting:)

RE: Favorite Weatherby Cartridge
What is 18% efficient?
"By the way the .340 shoots a 225gr bullet faster than the .300 wby shoots a 200gr! " That's because a 30 cal. 200 grain bullet is large for that caliber. A 225 grain bullet in .340 is about optimum. |
RE: Favorite Weatherby Cartridge
I'm not a fan of any Weatherby Cartridges really. I have a buddy that shoots a 257 and its impressive, and if I absolutely thought I needed one it would be the 30-378.
|
RE: Favorite Weatherby Cartridge
You couldn't give me a Weatherby and expect me to keep it. It would quickly get traded for a Sako.
Radiused shoulders, belted cases, lots of freebore in the barrel, 9 locking lugs...... no thanks. I would take a 330 Dakota,338 remington ultra mag, or338 Lapua mag over the 340Wby mag or 338-378 Wby mag any day. |
RE: Favorite Weatherby Cartridge
Never been a fan of large mangnum calibers.. I like the traditional 308 cartridge..
|
RE: Favorite Weatherby Cartridge
toss-up between 257 and 30-378.
|
RE: Favorite Weatherby Cartridge
I hunted a good bit with the 7mm WM. This is a very fine long distance cartridge. I had a Euro Mark. The rifle was very accurate with the heavier bullets(175), but it did not shot the light bullets very well. Very beautiful, and high quality firearm. Tom.

RE: Favorite Weatherby Cartridge
I've never owned a Weatherby chambering but shot a few, including the 460. If I were to pick one for the majority ofhunting I do, it would be the 257WM.
|
RE: Favorite Weatherby Cartridge
here we go...
|
RE: Favorite Weatherby Cartridge
fired a 460 wby today..........now that's a shoulder cannon.
|
RE: Favorite Weatherby Cartridge
why would anyone own one,the ammo is priced at 3 times normal price.
|
RE: Favorite Weatherby Cartridge
Ammo is really not that much more than a high end loading in say... 1 of the wsm's. I usually pay $40.00 for a box of 100 grain spire points for the .257
|
RE: Favorite Weatherby Cartridge
Agree with JoeSmith, especially say if you're comparing a .300 RUM say loaded by federal premium or anyone else for that matter with premium bullets such as nosler or barnes, also, unless you do alot of shooting/plinking at the range, a box of ammo for a hunt at $60 is of little impact on a hunt. I think its funny of late all the Rem ultra mags etc.....high velocity loads by the others, which .300 weatherby has been around for a while now, certainly longer than .300 RUM, etc....

RE: Favorite Weatherby Cartridge
Was it P.O. Ackley who said Weatherby wasn't a gunsmith but a marketing whiz? Weatherby is to guns what lots of chrome is to automobiles. Most of his models are just barrel eaters[:'(]

RE: Favorite Weatherby Cartridge
Roy Weatherby was a great cartridge designer, and a great marketing whiz.

RE: Favorite Weatherby Cartridge
My vote is for 30-378. I am not going to get involved with all the other junk said.
|
RE: Favorite Weatherby Cartridge
I like the .257 WM. I have little need for big, brusing cartridges.
|
RE: Favorite Weatherby Cartridge
257 Weatherby and 270 Weatherby are 2 of the finest all around big game cartridges ever invented.

RE: Favorite Weatherby Cartridge
I like the 300 Wby. Very versatile. Shoots flat and hits hard. 150gr for deer/antelope and 180 for bears/elk/moose. The bigger Wby kick a little too much for most shooters.

RE: Favorite Weatherby Cartridge
My Fibermark SS in 270 Win. with Fed. Premium 130gr is my favorite rifle of all time........PERIOD. It's a fine USA made piece of machinery. No Sauer, Ruger, Browning, Winchester, or Remington I've everhad will outshoot it from the bench. Not a big fan of Weatherby Cartridges, but their MK V rifles are among the best out of the box. I may have gotten one in a million, but it's the most accurate rifle I've ever shot. That says a lot. I've had Sauer 202 270, Remington 7 308, Winchester Featherweight Classic Stainless 7mag, Browning ABolt Stalker 308, Browning BAR 30-06, & 7mag, Ruger 77RL 308 & 270. None compare. I also like the short bolt throw. I'm sold on my MK V.

The only one that would interest me is the 30-378. But I'd just as soon not waste the money. Weatherby is way too expensive.

RE: Favorite Weatherby Cartridge
I have owned and shot
2-257 Wby Mag rifles 1-7mm Wby Mag rifle 1-340 Wby Mag rifle 1-300 Wby Mag rifle I did not care for the 257's. They were flat shooting, but I did not care for the cartridge's ability on deer. I had several deer make some longer runs after a shot, with little blood trail. The other WBY cartridge's were awesome performers on deer and elk. I do not know whether Roy was a genius or not. I know a lot of the mfrs. are mimicking his cartridges as far as performance are concerned. But they are 20 to 30 years behind him. A fellow above mentioned USA made Mark V's. Most of the Mark V's were not made in USA. His may have been-I do not know, but most were not. Roy made beautiful, classy, high performing rifles, and he made them 20 to 30 years before any one else. I also have a Mark V in 30-06 that I bought in 1978 for $300. I would not take a thousand for it now. They hold their value very well. Tom. |
RE: Favorite Weatherby Cartridge
I have a 300 WbY Sako L691 that I have hunted with for the last fourteen years and wouldn't trade it for anything. More accurate than I am capable of shooting it. Only draw back is when I shoot a deer under fifty yards the deer doesn't realize it is dead and will run fifty yards before expiring. I know it is overpowered for deer, but I carry it when I might have a 200 yard + shot....no guess work out to 300 yards.

RE: Favorite Weatherby Cartridge
This thread attracted my attention. I know nothing about Weatherby cartridges and never shot one.... So I saw this guy yesterday that I known for some time and he has a Mark V 300 Wby Mag that he’s had for maybe 30 years. Well this guy thinks the 300 Wby Mag was Gods gift to man. I’m telling you, he talked for 20 minutes on how this was the only cartridge to get if and how it does everything. Yes sir this was the answer to all for hunting. All I did was smile and listen...:)

ORIGINAL: CommonSense Most of the time, you can just tell the beast that you are hunting it with a Weatherby, and it will kill ITSELF. |
RE: Favorite Weatherby Cartridge
But you know, that Weatherby cartridges have an inherent magic associated with them, as soon as the bullet fired from a Weatherby case hits an animal, it has no choice but to kill over dead. Most of the time, you can just tell the beast that you are hunting it with a Weatherby, and it will kill ITSELF. |
RE: Favorite Weatherby Cartridge
ORIGINAL: bigbulls I would take a 330 Dakota, Yeah me too... infact.... I did! :D I really like Weatherby's rifles, though I don't care for too many of his calibers. If I had to pick a favorite it would be a 338-378. I do think, however, that his cartridges were historically major advances and acheivements in ballistics and theory. I think they lead to what many call magnumitis in some cases, but his theories, practices and so forth are definately of great historical merit. Right now my favorite Weatherby caliber is a .22 L.R.! |
RE: Favorite Weatherby Cartridge
I suppose you can chamber a rifle other than a dakota in a .330 dakota? though I think we're comparing a $7000 rifle to that of a $1000 rifle? I do like that the .330 doesn't have a belt, though I believe the ballistics of the .340 wby are a tad more impressive.

I do like that the .330 doesn't have a belt, though I believe the ballistics of the .340 wby are a tad more impressive. You can make em $7000.... in fact you can make them a heck of a lot more than that...but you don't have to. I don't know what the price is now, but when I bought my first one in 2005 it ran me about $3300 tax, tag, title, shipping, insurance, ammo, everything. Sold it for $4500, kept $100 worth of brass.. Second one I bought for $2800... did without iron sights and the quarter rib, already had the ammo. That is about as bare bones and inexpensive as they come. For the quality of rifle you get, it is unbeatable. As to getting it chambered in a rifle other than a dakota.... yes and no. You won't see any major company do it, as its proprietary to dakota. But certain gunsmiths will work with you. I have heard of folks getting them made on agreements where they will buy the gunsmith the reemer and he will do the work. And by a "tad more impressive" if you mean 50 fps across the board, but with more powder, less efficency, a longer action and MUCH MUCH more recoil... then yeah you'd be right. ;) Really beautiful part of that 330 dakota is it kicks like a 30/06 and hits like a 375 H&H... sounds like one too. And while weatherby makes a fine fine rifle.... Dakota takes them in spades... and this is from the guy who won a free weatherby and paid $2800 for the dakota he has now. And by the way, as someone who has shot just about every Weatherby caliber... I have yet to see a weatherby caliber even come within an inch of 3 shot group accuracy of what the dakotas can do. You do get what you pay for. :D |
RE: Favorite Weatherby Cartridge
I've always admired the 270 Weatherby, maybe because I'm a 270 fan. But if I were to buy one today it would be a 257 Weatherby.

RE: Favorite Weatherby Cartridge
rechecked, model 76......starting around $5000-$7000 base price + extras. No doubt a dakota should shoot better, if it didn't I'd be mad, don't own one yet, but again like I said, $1200 vs 5-7grand? Not sure how sub MOA a dakota will shoot, esp once youre talking over .308 calibers.....for a 3 shot group. So I think we're comparing apples and oranges is all I'm saying. I suspect dakota probably loads their ammo to more exact standards, though weatherby I suspect is no slouch either. I've shot my .340 out of the box no scope, it kicked, but no worries, i have a browning .270 which i suspect kicks very similar to what it would chambered in .30-06 and i barely feel it. I hear dakota's design helps recoil. who knows. I tend to think big calibers kick. I've yet to find a rifle to kick/intimidate me, so far though I've only shot up to .338 calibers. Also I heard the .338 RUM kicks more than the .340, which again, mine didn't kick significantly hard, in fact less than my .300 win mag and that was without the additional weight of a scope. Also will dakotas always be around? maybe bought out when founders get old? I worry about proprietary cartridges fading into existence. Not much of a worry with weatherby. Though at least to me, dakota seems to be one of the more well known of these. Though I'm sure many guys have never even heard of a dakota....
|
RE: Favorite Weatherby Cartridge
I also read that dakota makes/sells most of its rifles in cartridges other than it's own. Not sure I see the need to choose one of their cartridges over someone elses either. If I were to get a dakota today, it would be chambered in .458 Lott.

RE: Favorite Weatherby Cartridge
I owned a 257-Weatheby Accumark. I never could get great accuracy out of this rifle. I sold it after two years of sub standard accuracy results at long range.
Currently I own a Sako M-995 that is chambered in 340-Weatherby. I love this rifle. IF I had to sell all my guns except one? I would keep the 340-Wby. |
RE: Favorite Weatherby Cartridge
I have owned the 257wby and the 300wby.I liked the 257wby,but prefer the 300ultra mag over the 300wby.I was very disappointed in the accuracy of both markV rifles. If I was to own another 257wby,it would be built on a remington action.
