Default Caliber comparison

O.K. Just finished reading the "best rifle" thread. My question is best caliber for a wide variety of North American Game. If you had to thin your gun herd to one gun for all your hunting, not looking for overkill or huge recoil, what would the caliber be. Accurate and efficient on game (though does ot have to drop them in their tracks) from small deer through moose? My current rifle is a .270 that likes some bullets and absolutely hates others. If I was going to replace it I am trying to decide if I want to change calibers or remain with the same. By the way I have taken whitertails, hogs and a moose with it.

I have been thinking about thinning my gun collection. The one rifle I always grab come hunting season is my old 270. I'm sure I would be happy with just it for everything.

.270, .280, .308, 30-06, 7MM-087MM RM, or a dozen others in this catagory will do the job well, except maybe on big critters that bite

abou anythign between a 270 and a 300 Win Mag would be a good choice. IM not recoil shy so id stick with me 300 WSM but my dad loves his 30-06 and wouldnt trade it for anything. If i had to pick one it would be a 30-06 but id like to have somethinga little bigger.

The older I get the more I like the '06 based cartridges.

And the animals can't tell 'em apart from one another. Pick one, & go.

I guess if I could have only ONE big game rifle for NA hunting, and I've used a lot of them, it probably would have to be the time-tested 30-06. Really.

.284 cal chambered in 7mm rem mag has worked for antelope to moose and continues to be my goto CF in my collection. No doubt if limited to just one rifle it would be the one that would stay.

Now if you were to include big bears I would have to switch horses and most likelypick a .338 cal(the min. I'd wantfor bite's back game).

IMO the best all-around cartridge is the 7mm Rem Mag
