Lever guns

How many of you folks use leverguns and what kind are they?

JeffS 11-08-2007 06:01 AM

RE: Lever guns

I think the majority of people have a least one lever action. They might not use them for their primary guns but they are more popular than a lot of people think. Personally I have 3 marlins in 30/30, .35 Remington, .450 Marlin, and a Winchester 94 30/30. I still want to get a Marlin 39A .22.

I have a Marlin 336 in 30-30 and 2 Marlin 39As in .22. I love all three of them!! I use the .22s in squirrel season but I no longer use centerfires for deer anymore (ML only) so it has been officially retired until my son/daughter starts to hunt.

RE: Lever guns

I think your right Jeffs, most people have levers but not for their primary gun. Where I live the state just past a law that after a gazillion years, we now can use rifles instead of shotguns to hunt deer with. Being an owner of Marlins, Winchester and Henry's, I'm in my glory and levers are my primary firearms. With this new Hornady LE ammo, levers now have some range with a little more knock down power.

I currently own two '94 Win. 30-30's, one pre-64, one post, a '94 Win. 32 Spl., pre-64, a '71 Win. 348, and a fairly new Henry .22. Do I hunt with them? Naw. I often take the 32 Spl. to bear camp as a back-up gun, however. Although I will admit killing my first several deer with a '94 30-30. That was many moons ago.......... They really are nice to carry.

Marlin 336 in 30-30 and a Savage 99 in .300 Savage.

Both work really, really well on deer.

All I use up here in Canada is a Browning lever either 300wm or 325wsm. I will be buying a 308BLR for deer from now on. Great gun fast in the bush very reliable and safe.

I've owned a Win94 in the past and sold it, I won't own another 94. Leverguns really don't hold any interest to me- they don't do anything better than other types of actions and they come with fairly severe limitations.

You really love the lever action guns. I'm going to use my .450 out in West Texas this year as well. I have several guns I can use but I want something light weight to carry. The only problem with it is when you actually pull the trigger. It is not a gun you want to shoot too many times. I put a Zeisss 3 x 9 x 50 on it for hog hunting at night and it works great. If there is any moon at all I don't need a light to shoot and we haven't had anything run after being hit by it.

I have an 1894 Marlin 44 Magnum and gave my 336 30-30 to my son a couple of years ago. I am shopping for a mdl 94 Winchester 30-30 for myself now. For hunting and nostalgic purposes. Where I live and hunt pretty much caters to a levergun and after packing my 270 for 20 miles a day elk hunting this year I am even more in love with my short, easy to carry leverguns.

I have a Marlin 336, 30-30 and an old Win 94 in 22 mag. I love levers and always have. I'm starting to get used to bolt actions though, but I'm very picky as they all seem to bind and are not smooth. My dream gun in a BLR in 270 WSM, though I wouldn't turn one down in 308. The new Marlin 308 express (I think that's what they call it) excites me, but I'm leary of cartriges that only fit one gun. I have a friend with a Win 94 in .307 that loves the gun but can't get ammo. The new Hornady ammo is great. We used it this year and it seems to do well on the trajectory side of things.

They're not everyone's cup of tea, but I love 'em.

RE: Lever guns

I havea Marlin 336, in 30-30. I used to have one in .35 rem, but traded it for the 30-30 for a couple of reasons: the ammo for .35 rem is ridiculously expensive, and 30-30 ammo is about the cheapest you can get. Secondarily, the .35 jammed a lot, cost me a big buck one time. Now that I've shot a few deer with the 30-30, I can tell a big difference in the effectiveness between the two calibers. The .35 put a hole clean through em, almost every time. Most of the time with the 30-30, no exit wound. Makes a huge difference.

I've always fantasized about owning a model 99 featherweight carbine, in .308, clip fed, with the folding tang peep sight.....

I've got a browning 22 that my father bought back in the 70s and just this year picked up a Puma M92 chambered in 357 that I'm using for CAS and deer. Just found a load yesterday for deer that I like. Great little gun though.

I have a winchester 9410, which is the lever action .410 they made a few years ago. My dad bought two when they came out and gave me one of them last thanksgiving. I wouldn't mind having one in 44 mag to be honest.

I don't have much use for the gun, but it looks real pretty in my gun rack;).

I used to have a henry .22 lever action, but sold it. Wish I would have kept it to be honest, it was a real shooter.

I don't own any centerfire guns, and if I were to get one I think it would be a bolt action.

FA,

Like Paul, I have a winchester 9410. I bought it for my son (He's 3 now) so it hasn't been out of the box yet. I also have a winchester .44 magnum. It is a fun gun to shoot andcrazy accurate at 50 yds.

Marlin leverguns are the only centerfire I've ever hunted with and the only thing I've owned. 336C .35, 1895G, 39-A Mountie, 336SS, and coming in 08 308MX, 1894 .44, and probably a 336W. I refuse to hunt with anything other than a lever. I am considering a Browning BLR in .300WSM right now but I havent really set my mind on it.

bought a 30-30 marlin 336a last season. I use it when we are in the woods or driving thru the thick stuff. I had a scope on it but since removed. See thru rings and accuracy just wasn't there. I love hunting with it. It's nice and short, lightweight, no recoil and with iron sights i can hit whatever i point it at in close range. Wouldn't be without it on a deer hunt.

Here's a guy after my own heart. Although, I admit, I do hunt with bolts and scopes, too. But I *love* lever-actions -especially Winchester 94s- and I hunt with minewhenever I get the chance.Hunting with a 94 just can't be beat, IMO.

If I'm on a hunting trip, I bring my Win 94 30-30 along. I'll use it whenever (took it with and got a speed goat with it in October) but I like it best when I'm in heavy woods or walking.

Marlin 1894 .45 Colt. My primary hunting rifle. No, I don't use the cowboy loads for hunting. I buy from buffalo bore. 325gn 1325fps. Out of a blackhawk anyway. I've never bothered to have mine chrono'd. Shoots good. Used to use Cor-bons, but I just found buffalo bore and I like them better. Cheaper too.
