Default 30-06 or 7mm Mag

Gotta move fast. Local store has a Savage package for about 300 bucks. they have .270, 30-06 and 7mm Mag. I don't much like the .270 although I respect their deer taking ability. I am tempted toward the 7mm Mag, just because of the awesome balistics this thing can produce, but the cost and variety of ammo for the 30-06 is much more attractive. I will be hunting deer. a local WMA with shots that either could easily be overkill for, and a yearly trip to the Mountains here in VA. tell me what you think please.

Either one will do fine for taking deer .It just comes down to a matter of your personal preference as to what one you choose .

Decisions.....decisions.

7m has so much punch, shoots flat, and has great range.
30-06 has more ammo choices, is a great proven round. doesn't have as much punch, but has enough to take dear at 500 yards....if you are skilled enough to adjust for the drop of the round ( and properly judge the distance)

I didn't have this much trouble deciding if I should get married or not.

Aw heck, just for deer get the 7mag. It's fun to shoot and you'll never need anything bigger.

Went with the 30-06 this morning. Picked up a box of Winchester 150 gr powerpoint rounds also. I'll take it out tomorrow morning and sit in a tree till about 11, then (yes I know this is backwards) I'll print 3 rounds at 100-150 yds just to give me piece of mind.

Since I got some good input, I thought I would follow up. I enjoyed carrying the 30-06 in the woods yesterday. Missed a really nice buck who was trotting thru the area. got a ton of excuses, but I can't blame it on the rifle. about noon, I took 3 shots with it at an improvised target at about 90 paces (I'm 6'2&quot shot 3 inches high, and about 4 inches to the right. So I just plain missed the buck. exciting anyway, and with that rifle, I am certain I will more than make up for it in the years to come. Maybe I don't have too much to compare it to, but I didn't think the scope was bad.
