Savage 11 FYCAK
 

I've been on a buying binge lately. You may have read my post on the 870 youth I got for my grandson. Well, I ordered a Savage 11FYCAK in 7-08 for him. Picked it up on Friday and mounted a 3-9X Burris Fullfield on it and gave it a good cleaning. Neat little rifle. It is blued with synthetic stock, detachable mag and muzzlebrake.
I had several loads made up for my Browning so I took itto the range. After doing the barrel break-in, I started shooting the various loads in 3 shot groups while sighting in the scope. I gave the rifle a good cleaning between groups. Four different loads shot groups from .8" to 1.2" with different 139 gr bullets. Then I shot some 150 gr winchester bullets I had loaded. The first group was just a tad over .5". Thinking it may have been a fluke, I put up a new target and shot the same load again. First round went 1/2" high at 12 oclock. Second bullet I didn't see, and same with the third. (And I forgot my spotting scope). I thought the scope may have gone nuts on me until I went to the target. All 3 bullets were in one ragged hole with a group size of .2" center-center. I don't know if the grandson is going to get this rifle when he is old enough. Or it may be wore out by then.

Nice shooting! I keep debating on getting a Savage myself and trying one out. After my last purchase it will be a while now before I can justify buying another rifle!

I'm sure your going to be his favorite grandpa! :D

Thanks Rammer - I already am his favorite. Besides, he is a great excuse to keep filling up my gun safe. Now if I can just justify getting him a 500 S&W:eek:

AHH!! Grandkids are a great excuse to buy guns. I used this loop hole many times. I am sure I have my wife fooled. NOT!! She knows me to well.:D. You might just as well buy that Savage Rammer, Get it over with.;)

I've got the same exact gun in a 270win and I have the same problem you do it wants to shoot 1 hole groups what a shame ;).

Rammer - don't be afraid to buy a Savage. I got 5 in the past 2 years including this one. I have 2 11s, one 116, a 93 in .17hmr and a Mk II in .22lr. I got my 93 pre-Accutrigger and the only change I made was put a rifle-basix trigger in it. Every one of them can shoot. The .17 HMR is my favorite toy. It shoots ragged hole groups at 50 yds and is cheap and fun. The .223 in my 11FL consistantly shoots 1/2" groups with 50 gr Nosler Ballistic tips and my 116FLSS in 30-06 regularly shoots 1" groups at 100 yds. The only comment that I would consider negative about the synthetic stocks on the 11s and the 116 is that it is a bit flimsy in the forend. Especially close to the end where the swivel stud is located. Putting too much downward pressure when using a bi-pod can bend it up to the barrel causing a pressure point and varying the point of impact. I was contimplating installing an additional stud a bit lower on the stock for my bi-pod but haven't done it yet.

I have a FYCAK in 243 on the way. What scope mounts did you use. I am looking for 2 piece, Leopold only had one for this rifle and it is of the quick release variety. I would prefer it to be a permanent mount.
