For deer hunting,the 25-06 will do anything that the 30-06 will do,but with a flatter trajectory and less recoil.

So will a 270 Win and 7mm-08 Rem. Along with the 25-06 Rem they are probably as close to a perfect deer hunting cartridge as one can get.

I find my loads in the 06 seem o.k. been loading this bullet for some 40 years now and with a hornady 165 interlock pointed buellt and IMR 3031 44.5 grains never had a prblem with recoil.
I also think a great cal: is the 7x57 mauser had a few over the years great deer cal: with no recoil at all.

Gentlemen....

Lets face a few facts. For whitetail deer hunting any caliber between the .243 Winchester and the .300 Winchester Magnum can be considered a deer rifle. Some consider the .243 a bit light. Some consider the .300 a bit harsh. But, realistically...any caliber between those two will get the job done. Why argue over which is better. The "best" rifle caliber is the one you can shoot well.

Having said that, I have chosen as my "hunting trip" rifle a Winchester Model 70 in 30/06. It will work on Pronghorns to Moose. It offers the versatility I like, suitable accuracy and moderate recoil. Yes, the 25/06 would be better suited for Pronghorns and Deer. Yes, the 300 Win Mag would be better suited for Elk and Moose. But, the 30/06 will do it all for me. This allows me to be a better rifleman with my chosen rifle. the 30/06 is best for me because I can shoot it well.

A-MEN! For my father, the "chosen" rifle was a 7x57, and that was because it was given to him. 3 sheep, 2 goats, 2 mulies, 2 moose, 3 antelope, 2 black bears, 6 elk, and many, manywhitetails can't argue that his rifle isn't effective. Only 1 of these animals required a second shot, and that was due to a clean miss. As it is his only centerfire rifle, he's become reasonably proficient with it.

When I decided that I,too, would like to hunt "big game", I purchased a .30-'06, knowing that it's capable of cleanly harvesting anything and everything I could envision hunting, and also knowing that I could shoot that rifleenough to shoot it well. I made my decision knowing the cartridge's limitations, and my own. For me, it was a great choice.

I own 6 handguns, and I can shoot all of them really well... afterI go through the3+ boxes of ammo it takes for me to refamiliarize myself with that particulargun. Funny, I don't have that problem with my '06!

As said before, the shooter is the number one most important part of the equation. If i have a .577 t-rex and cant shoot it, then i wont kill anything!
